Last year’s maple leaf, or maybe older yet
no flesh remaining, just dry bones
maybe veins and arteries,
just the skeletal structure,
a hint of the life it led;
yes, that may be the best way
to describe the little that remains
of our springtime discovery
As threadbare as old cheesecloth,
paper-bag-brown, soft, but unbending,
like corn starch to my touch
complicated designs intricate
filaments of cotton, dyed brown,
dipped in matte-finish lacquer,
a lattice, a spider’s web of design
just resting there, on the lawn,
uncovered in our furious raking
gathered in, the last of last year’s fall
to be turned back into soil, compost
An old leaf, maybe seen as orange
in the brilliance of last autumn
now as threadbare as old cheesecloth
a treasure to be found in the green moss
the rich whites and yellow
of our wild strawberry blossoms
hidden in plain view, waiting,
for those who discover its beauty
