Last year’s maple
leaf, or maybe older yet
no skin, no flesh
remaining, just the dry bones
maybe the veins
and arteries,
no color lasting,
only
a hint of the life
it led
yes, that may be
the best way
describing the
little that remains
picked up, pulled
from
the rising
new-born grass shoots
as threadbare as
old cheesecloth,
paper-bag-brown, soft
like corn starch
to my touch
complicated
intricate structures
a lattice, a
spider’s web of design
just resting
there, on the lawn,
pulled from the
mulch, unearthed
uncovered in our
furious raking
gathering in, the
last of last year’s fall
to be turned back
into soil
an old leaf, maybe
seen in the brilliance of autumn
now as threadbare
as old cheesecloth
a treasure to be
found in the green of the moss
the rich whites
and yellow
of the wild
strawberry blossoms
hidden in plain
view
for those who
discover its beauty
