On a floor of needles and leaves
Hidden within the lush branches
Cloistered from the world
I sat in a cathedral of pine;
Five trees encircled my prayer
Limbs knitted like arms around me
wrapped around my reverie.
Walled off from the world around me
Watched only by squirrels,
By the young lady slippers, the ferns,
Birds, salamanders, insects,
The other denizens of the
Small island in the lake
A hidden sanctuary for one.
Ringed by the lady slippers, the ferns,
by high and low-bush blueberry plants
A stillness in the chaos of that summer;
Somewhere to ponder, to reflect,
To slow down and commune
With the Spirit of the Creator
By the still, calm lake.
