First Contact – v2

Oh how well I remember

the butterflies, the excitement

driving to your house,

to spend some time with you

get to know you better,

that fall morning

fifteen years ago

Reading the directions,

not wanting to get lost

Happy for the time together

quiet, chatting with you

A fluster of commotion

so soon to arrive;

but now a bit of peace

A few hours not enough time

asking you for a date,

but other plans

for the moment;

So we’ll have to wait,

but not too long.

Creatures of the air are the creatures of creation

Birds, bats, flying squirrel, flying fish, cardinals, crow, the eagle,

pelican, penguin, puffin, parrot, and peacock,

these are creatures of creation

Creatures of the sea are the creatures of creation

Anemone, the jellyfish, the starfish, the clam, coral,

the eel, the shrimp, walrus, whale, shark, and seahorse,

these are creatures of creation

Creatures of the lakes and rivers are the creatures of creation

Trout, bass, the snapping and box turtle, the otter, the beaver,

the duck, the frog, the mosquito, these are creatures of creation

Creatures of the forest are the creatures of creation

elk, moose, the brown and black bear, the fox, lynx, turkey,

the mink, woodpecker, hawk, the owl, the salamander, the deer,

the porcupine, the panda, these are creatures of creation

Creatures of the desert are the creatures of creation

horned lizard, the snake, the tortoise, the iguana,

the camel, the scorpion, these are creatures of creation

Creatures of the shoreline are the creatures of creation

crab and plover, gull, osprey, snail, barnacle,

these are the creatures of creation

Creatures of the tundra, the Antarctic, are the creatures of creation

polar bear, the seal, caribou and reindeer, penguin, krill,

whales, these are the creatures of creation

Creatures of the mountains are the creatures of creation

llama, the goat, the eagle, sheep, mountain lion, the vole,

the yak, the hare, these are creatures of creation

Creatures of the plains are the creatures of creation

bison, the giraffe, the gazelle, the lion, the zebra, the quail,

vulture, the meerkat, ants, horse, and kangaroo, these are creatures of creation

Creatures of the jungle, the garden, are the creatures of creation

python, the elephant, the gorilla, the crocodile, tree frogs, butterfly,

Out in our Garden – v2

The smell of rich soil,

wet from the drenching rains,

weeds yield to my gentle tug

up into my hands

beds of shimmering color,

the droplets refracting, reflecting

radiating warmth, richer hues

buzzing of the bees, the flies,

I stop to watch the yellow swallowtail

hovering over the blooms,

the bright cosmos, the yellow marigolds,

the stately Black-eyed Susan,

Cool mud under my nails, green stain

on my finger, a hint on my shorts

A smile on my face, under the thin sweat

out in our garden, the girls in the yard

laughing in the summer sun

safe in God’s arms

A Big Gapped Grin – v2

She stood there,

at the top of the stair

with hand outstretched

for me to view, to see,

her first tooth,

clutched like a butterfly

in her palm, her small hand

Grinning ear to ear

with pride, anticipation,

and the knowing

of the coins to come

from the beloved

Out of the cocoon of the world
the darkness of this life
lost, confused
wandering, afraid

Affirmations with the Butterflies

The butterflies, within me
testing my faith
not the whole story
not in the least

Affirmations with the butterflies
from all around the globe
prayers raised for me
something I know in my heart

That my act, my choice
my stepping out in faith
will bear fruit for the kingdom
as I am called to serve

Bursting Forth

Changed, transformed
forevermore, a new creation
like the butterfly out of its cocoon
its wings stiffening
new blood through the veins
warming in the sun, the breeze.

The same for us, the old cast off
new blood of the Spirit
indwelling within us
warmed by the Son’s light
quickened by the breath of God
Our lives changed forevermore
a new life bursting forth.

Call to Worship:
It is good to praise the LORD and make music to your name,
O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning and your
faithfulness at night, to the music of the ten-stringed lyre
and the melody of the harp. For you make me glad by your
deeds, O LORD; I sing for joy at the works of
your hands. (Psalm 92:1-4 NIV)
Unison Prayer:
Loving God, we thank you for this day that we may come into
Your house and worship You. We ask that Your Holy Spirit
would fall down upon us gathered here so that we may
understand all that You would have us hear this day.
We thank you for the Spirit that you have gifted us with.
We pray that our worship would be pleasing in Your sight.
This we pray in the strong name of Your Son, Lord Jesus Christ.
Old Testament Reading: 1 Samuel 16:6-13
*Prayer of Dedication (unison)
Heavenly Father, you have offered us such abundance.
We are so very blessed. Yet, we often think that we have so little.
Some of us may even feel as though our gift is too small.
Thank you for reminding us that even our mustard seed-sized
gift may grow beyond our individual possibility. So, today we
place before you all amounts of gifts – some quarters from
children, some $1 bills from adults, some larger bills and
checks – knowing that you transform our scarcity into your
abundance. Thanks be to God. Amen. (GBOD)

A Reality

A dawning, a changing of the old
unraveling threads of time,
happening before the witnessing eye
A nation turning, transforming,
like a butterfly out of a cocoon,
a nation rising from a long night
slumber giving way to light
dawning, rising, renewing
a transition of power
moving forward, a nation
together, hopeful, prayerful
longing for the truth of our creed
the highest ideals, the better angels
our nature wrapped in the words
the oath, the prayers, and his speech
