Before the Manger – v2

The story of Christ

long before the manger

the promise of God

long ago, in the prophets

in the ancient scriptures

but more than this

more intimate, personal

The story of two couples

of Elizabeth and Mary

cousins, one older, one so young

each pregnant, afraid, uncertain,

their husbands, trying to understand

the plan God had for them

these babies about to be born

Fathers, Zechariah and Joseph

trying to believe

to be faithful to them

God’s plans for them

needing the angels

to guide, to comfort

to help them along

Long before the manger,

the star’s ascending

the couples’ lives intersecting

helping them remain

faithful to God

each playing their parts

in God’s perfect plan.

rising from the water

bathed, anointed,

in their fathers’ love

Speak Zechariah – v2

Speak Zechariah, what shall be his name;

Who will this son of yours be, your baby boy

What is his calling, even now, speak Zechariah

What did the angel tell you, what have you learned,

what can you reveal, after your silence?

He is to be the One, the One who was foretold

crying in the wilderness, making straight the way

Making the way of the Lord straight,

telling the people the Good News -

The Messiah comes!

His is to be a Prophet, Elijah, bringing our people

those willing, back to God, to welcome Him

Who Is Coming, even now, coming to save

God, incarnate, the Messiah, blessing the world

offering us, even now, salvation, for all

a horn of salvation – v5

A horn of salvation,

the oil of Samuel,

poured upon David;

consecrating his life.

A horn of salvation;

a promise given to him;

his family would rule

on God’s holy throne.

A horn of salvation,

out of the root of Jesse;

new life coming,

through this descendant of David.

A horn of salvation

just as God promised;

hope for our future

in the One who had come.

the whisper of the snake

sin entering creation

because of Satan

the adversary, the Devil

the Evil One

the fallen angel

Lucifer fallen

creating a lie

that lives to this day

a lie entered creation

shattering perfection

a fallen angel, Lucifer

lying to the humans

to Eve and Adam

telling them a lie

changing our course
