The word King on Christ’s sign – v10

Pilate’s bold assertion
the speaking of truth
having it written down
to shame, to teach them a lesson
the word, “King”, on Christ’s sign
not something less than that

Pilate proclaiming, speaking
the title of the Savior
the Messiah, the Christ
the truth to their power
naming their crime, blasphemy;
they were killing the Son of the living God

The word King on Christ’s sign – v9

Words of defiance, to shame them
The bold assertion, the power
the speaking of truth to their claim
Caesar’s emissary, oppressor
sticking his thumb in their eye
The word, “King”, on Christ’s sign

Not something less than that
Pilate proclaiming, speaking
truth to their power, false
Naming their crime, blasphemy
not seeing, eyes blind,
Killing the Son of God

“Making the secular Holy”
----
This poem is about my wife and me when we got married
in a civil service on December 17, 2004 in Concord, NH in White Park
and then before our church family at
Wesley United Methodist Church in Concord, NH
on April 23, 2005.
----
We celebrate 2 anniversaries because they both mean a great
deal to us, in very different ways.
I grieve for those who are able to marry civilly in so many
states now, such as NH, but are unable to marry in their
United Methodists churches and for the clergy who are put on trial
for choosing to go against the Discipline to marry them.

held in check, in chains
under their boot

abuse of power

too many innocents
dying in secret

a burden unanswered
the truth before us
looking in the mirror

so many without promise
no jobs, no life, no hope
a burden remaining
weighing heavy, a stone

The Vipers in Power – v3

The vipers John called out
seated in power, in judgment
claiming their path righteous
while they stand on their neighbors
the poor, the downtrodden, the infirm,
those who count on us, those in need

The language he used
denying their piety
their repentance hollow
empty words only, nothing,
when compared to their actions
hurting those in need

So in this time, our nation, our states
the vipers in power, truly,
wielding the mace
putting us in chains
denying the aid, the comfort
what they really need

The voice of the innocents
the poor, the downtrodden, the infirm,
the imbalance of society
the haves taking their pound of flesh
from those who have nothing
those just struggling for life

What would Jesus say to them
if he stood in the committee room
would he overturn the tables
as he did in the temple
would he weep for this generation
lost in depravity

A Beat in Concord – v6

I was sitting there in the traffic, waiting for the light
the heat and humidity building in her van,
one window open to the moist air after the flooding
Only there for a moment, in shadows, but enough to remember
caught by that sight, his movements, with a purpose
under the highway, waiting for the light

I saw a character, a caricature, a man out of time
a frozen specter, a cartoon character,
on the sidewalk, under the underpass, half in shadow
He was a Beat, a throwback, caught in time
not a Ginsberg, no he wouldn’t Howl,
a modern day Kerouac, or someone who aspired to be

It was his affect, his walk, his gait, his hair, his clothes
a slouched walk, bath sandals that had been worn outside too long
hunched shoulders, time spent in dimly lit libraries,
Before glowing computer screens, shaded lamps
an oversized blazer from the thrift store, elbows patched
over a frock prom shirt, frilled and with cranberry edging

I could sense the latte on his breath
smell of clove cigarettes in the wool of the coat
too warm for the day around him, swelter
A mop of coarse black hair
that hadn’t seen a brush in days
sunken eyes, and a certainty, a knowing

He’d written lines far darker than these
in journey, in notebooks, dog-eared from use
words that would confuse and provoke
Unfairness of the mundane, inertia
the bleakness of his bourgeois existence
unaware of his place, his role in the intelligentsia

A yawn at the coffee house, or maybe a demigod
hard to say across the street, as I was
driving by his path for those few seconds
Before my light went green and I went on down the road
away from the college-aged, but no-longer-in-college Beat
walking, on the street in Concord

a world without water – v2

a world without water
when we are so comfortable
where is our outrage
where is our mercy

what will make us
stand up, take notice
how will we join
in justice for them

will we remain complacent
fat and lazy, the same
will we join with them
demanding their rights

who will stand up
who will speak out
where there is need
let there be light

we are witnesses too – v3

as heirs with them
we join with Peter
with the first disciples
the followers of Christ
to shine His light
we are witnesses
of God’s might, God’s power

to bring Christ with us
to the ends of the earth
to share his message
His light shining
we are the light

The Heads Opening – v3

The necks of the ferns
rising in the warm ground
the fiddleheads opening
like the wings of butterflies

Blood making them rigid
colors becoming richer
the ferns unfurling
like massive sails of the undergrowth

Warming even without sunlight
filtered in the mist of the morning
a blanket in the forest
green an endless sight
