Mary sat at the feet of Jesus,
in the room where He was speaking,
to hear His urgent message,
not staying busy with her work…
 
Mary fell before the Messiah,
she listened to Christ’s voice,
in the room with Lazarus, the others,
not staying busy with her work…
 
Mary chose the better path,
and it will not be taken from her,
sitting at the feet of Jesus,
not staying busy with her work…

breaking with tradition – v3

Martha, in their mourning,
the loss of their brother
hearing Christ was coming,
that the Master was near.
 
Taking offer her apron,
setting down the platter,
not needing to be the hostess,
breaking with tradition,
not simply sitting shiva.
 
Martha, running to find Jesus,
not waiting for Him to come,
leaving the mourners in the home
the others sitting shiva,
tearing at their clothes.
 
Leaving them in their prayers,
going out on the road to meet Him,
leaving her duties behind her
to come before Christ.

the snake lied – v3

Of something I am certain,

the snake lied at the beginning

hissing in the garden;

His words of death were real

knowledge is not power.

In our hands, our minds,

Knowledge is a curse

the snake oil the snake sold us;

There in the garden, death,

at the beginning of our history.

God made a perfect plan,

one requiring no effort

no changes, no correction;

but we blew it to pieces

there in the garden.

Listening to talking snakes

was such a bad idea…

Mesmerized, watching

Mouth open observers

The skill, artistry

Effortlessness in the heat

Of the sweating craftsmen

In the beach air, hot,

On the Vineyard, love.

Living, moving

Molten glass, clear

Droop on the shaft

Entering, awakening

Orange maw open

Mouth of the furnace

Reborn anew.

Glow yellow

Pulsing, living

From the warming

Glistening wet

Solid yet alive

Grow with the blow

Liquid and free.

Spin and catch

Supple flesh flap

Add color and form

Enter again, stretch,

Translucence now

Hot gases, expanding,

Fill the space.

Wipe brow, enter again

Cool and gel, cut from the pipe

Clutched like a Faberge egg

A robin’s egg, fragile, held

By a toddler’s fingers

Placed to firm and harden

Permanent stuff.
