Love is the Message

The only word for God
the reason he came to earth
walking as a man
to give us eternal life

Love is the message
the only commandment of God
all the rest layers
expanding on that word

Coming to earth to save us
not to condemn us for our sin
redeemed by his sacrifice
saved by his grace alone

We are to be messengers
not of hate but love
bringing others the blessed good news
Jesus came for you

Speaking Directly to Us

Not in the words we read
the lessons we try to apply
experience in this life
what has been passed down

Only in that moment
when we hear our savior’s call
speaking directly to us
out on the dusty road

Changing our lives utterly
the Spirit dwelling within
turning our lives over to him
becoming part of the family

Giving our lives over
following the disciple’s path
going where we are sent
heeding our master’s call

On Our Path

Stopping us
like Paul
out on our path

A message from the risen Lord
asking us to change
to turn our lives to him

Something incredible
God caring for us
calling us in our lives
to become fishers of men

Joining in the ministry
each of us with a part
the gifts of the Spirit
to lift the body up

Going as we are sent
to the ends of the earth
sharing God’s message of love
healing the whole world

Revealed by Christ

Stopped dead in his tracks
blinded by light from above
falling, silent before our Lord
his voice descended
speaking from heaven above

True salvation
not following the law
turning our lives over
becoming sheep of his flock
climbing the hill of Calvary
dying with him on the cross

Grace without end
unmerited love, divine
God calling us to him
through the gate of his life
rising with him
to the highest heaven

Not Something He was Taught

The news which we share
the good news handed down
Christ coming into the world
to save all of mankind

Not something he was taught
not written down
revealed by the risen Christ
on the Damascus Road

Life as a Gift

A place in eternity, life as a gift
God’s amazing grace
offered to us all
through the gate of Christ

Nothing we have done
in our walk on earth
only the sacrifice of Christ
giving us rebirth

Bringing us to the Lord
only to believe
the gift of grace
our heavenly reward

When the time was ripe
in the fullness of time
Christ came to earth
walking as a man

Come to free us from sin
the chains of the law
grace alone redeeming us
nothing we could pay

Now to spread the good news
of the father, of the son
the love God for each of us

Like a Shield

Your love protecting our hearts
covered like a shield
ever turning to you
certain of your grace

Give our hearts courage
to boldly serve you
fill us with your Spirit
that we would sing of your love

Healing the whole world
no one to be left out

Singing With Gladness

All of us together
join in our hearts
singing with gladness
praises to our heavenly king
for his mercy and his grace

His presence with us
the Spirit dwelling within
all of life’s troubles simpler
when we turn to God

Joy in the notes that we share
the melody of creation
rising with one voice
singing ever praises to God

A Song to Our Heavenly King

We all come together
across time and space
one choir forming
responding to his grace

Singing together
many languages and yet one voice
singing all a song to our heavenly king

man and all living things

Raising Our Voices

Oh what humble singers
joyfully with the others
all of creation proclaiming
singing to our God

Raising our voices, united
ever in praise to him
love swelling our hearts
singing to our God and king

He is our redeemer
the savior of our sin
reconciling all creation
with our creator, our God

Ever singing, joyful
trembling at the thought of his grace
forgiving all who are humble
turning toward his face

We join together
ever singing to God
raising our song of praise
to our creator, our king

Joyfully singing
with the heavenly choir

for the goodness of God

His grace overflowing
his love for all here below

Singing of His Goodness

Establishing his presence
our awareness of our God
the feeling of him with us
all the days of our lives

Singing of His goodness
of his grace poured out
the love of our savior
going for us to the cross

Not leaving us alone
sending the Spirit to walk with us
carrying us onward
on the journey of life

Praising our Lord
and creator
for the work of his hands
and his love for mortal man

The road to Calvary
from the beginning
before the creation
the cross’ shadow looming
part of God’s plan

Prepared from the beginning
our fall from grace,
the failure of the law,
the need for Christ
to take our place

Going to the cross
that we could be his children
redeemed by the blood of the lamb
dying and rising again

Chosen before the world
knowing our names in glory

We may not carry
scars from beatings
from proclaiming
the good news of Christ

Unlike Paul
many journey onward
only words
questioning our path

So much more
we should soldier onward

The Symbol of the Cross

The simple cross of wood
around my neck, reminding
symbol of the cross of Jesus
where he suffered
and died for me

Carried with me
on my journey
going with me day to day
onward marching
following my savior

Keep Doing Good

All of our days
follow our master’s plan
not growing weary
continue doing good
in the ways of the Lord

Responding to His grace
redeeming each one
brought from sin to paradise
no longer fearing death, the grave
offering us love instead

Giving to others,
as we would wish to receive,
caring for others in need;
following the way of our risen Lord,
singing praises to our God and king

Guiding When They Stumble

Watching for our brothers
our sisters in this walk
offering assistance
guiding when they stumble
giving freely
that none would slip
that no one would fall

Help for our neighbor
that we both would stay on the path
the road, the way
following Christ ever
our brother, our savior
going as he leads us
as he calls us to serve

Restored to the family
the community of believers
all sinners needing God’s grace
Gently guiding
our fellow travelers closer
conforming our lives
to our master’s will

Crucifying My Past

In repenting
belonging to Christ
going to Calvary with Him

Crucifying my past
my sins on the cross
dying with Him

Buried in the grave
descending to Sheol
with my master, my king

Rising with Him
on the third day
forever freed of my sin

Bearing fruit worthy
or so is my prayer
following the king of glory

The Powerful of this Earth

The admonition not to follow
placing our hopes
in the powerful of this earth
They, like us, returning
to the dust from which we come
at the end of our days

“Blessed Are the Peacemakers”

The Lord be with you. . .
And also with you. . .
Let us pray…

Our loving Triune God, we that you for this day that we may come into your temple and worship you. We that you for the freedoms that were fought for us so long ago and those who fought for those freedoms. We thank you for those ancient words that have been handed down from generation to generation. We pray for your Spirit to be with us as we worship you and hear the word you have for us this day. Speak Lord. . .your children are listening. . .

Good Morning…tomorrow is such a special day for us as American’s, it is the day that we remember those people in our lives that made a difference. We remember loved ones, we remember those who fought for our freedom and we also remember those who continue to fight for our freedom. We remember those who, without them, we would have no church, those who gave us a legacy of freedom, and those who fought to set us free.

Today is also a special day for us as United Methodist. It is peace with justice Sunday. You see. . .in 1980, the General Conference created a church wide peace with justice program that was assigned to the General Board of Church and Society. This special Sunday was established more than a half a century ago to build recognition and support to the work of the United Nations.

You know. . .all this freedom and peace talk has gotten me thinking. . .it has made me think about Jesus. What did Jesus come for? What was His new and radical way of living? The people of His time were looking for a Messiah. . .someone who would fight for them against the Roman Empire. In Luke. . .Jesus sounded almost like He would be that type of Messiah. It is found in Luke 4:14-21 and it reads: (and I’m reading from the New Living Translation)

14 Then Jesus returned to Galilee, filled with the Holy Spirit’s power. Reports about him spread quickly through the whole region. 15 He taught regularly in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.
16 When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures. 17 The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released,
that the blind will see,
that the oppressed will be set free,
19 and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.”
20 He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently. 21 Then he began to speak to them. “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!”

Jesus told them that the Scripture had been fulfilled in their hearing. . .The Messiah would not only bring Good News to the poor (Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven) but also the Messiah would set the captives free, (Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.) the blind would see and the oppressed would go free (Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.). The favor of the Lord was upon Him (Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God).

Now God heard the cries of His people, God’s favor was on the anointed one, God would work through the Messiah, but. . .this Messiah was not going to be a fighter, this Messiah was going to be a lover. . .a lover of even His enemies. What a new and radical way to bring about peace (Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons(and daughters) of God.)

I have been hearing a lot about No. and So. Korea and their problems in the news. These people are the same but they are fighting against each other (and have been for years). So. Korea even had an “anti-No. Korea” rally on Thursday of last week. You see. . .no. Korea is being blamed for the torpedoing of a So. Korea warship that sank back in March this year that killed 46 sailors. Of course No. Korea denies they did this act of war. And this is fight of No. and So. Korea right now is over their western sea border. There have been 3 bloody battles over this sea border. They are now saying that if any So. Korean ships “intrude” on No. Korean waters there will be immediate physical strikes.

No. Korea is even thinking about banning So. Korean personal and vehicles from entering a joint industrial park which is the last remaining major inter-Korean reconciliation project. When will the madness end? This is supposed to be a place of healing and now one of the parties may be banned from trying to receive that healing and oneness that can come from this industrial park.

I think Wayne Dyer was right when he said:
"All blame is a waste of time. No matter
how much fault you find with another,
and regardless of how much you
blame him, it will not change you"
- Wayne Dyer

The US has even jumped on board with So. Korea as they announced that they will conduct a joint anti-submarine exercise. Professor Yang, who is a scholar with the University of No. Korean Studies in Seoul, has even said that “the power struggles between the 2 Korea’s could result in some of the most terrible things to happen since the Korean War.” When will this stop!?

This Memorial Day we need to remember those who fought for freedom, we need to remember those who have gone before us, we also need to remember those radical individuals that touched the human race. . .individuals like Gandhi, Mother Theresa of Calcutta, Martin Luther King Jr., Jesus of Nazareth. It’s not working the way we are doing it. Maybe it’s time we tried a new and radical way of life. . .it couldn’t hurt but it could be the change that would unite humanity. . .

Let us pray. . .
Almighty God, who through your prophets foretold a day when swords will be beaten into plowshares and who in Jesus Christ made peace through the blood of the cross, pour out your Spirit on all people everywhere so that we may be delivered from hate, hostility, and self-seeking, and find our peace in your will. In your mercy, make us instruments of your peace, that your name may be hallowed, your kingdom come, and your will be done on earth as it is in heaven, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

To the Cross, to the Grave

My life changed
going to the cross, to the grave
being put to death with Christ
only then could I know
the depth of his sacrifice

Changing His Life

Saved by Christ
his voice from above
blinded that he may see

Changing his life
turning to him
bringing his love to man
that all would believe

A servant of Christ
the rest of his days
a witness to his holy power

Telling the world
of his sacrifice
dying that we would live
with him in paradise

Prayer of Dedication:
“Abundant God, we thank you for the jars of our lives
that are constantly being filled. We offer our gifts to you,
that others may know of your abundance and grace.
Fill the hungry with good things. Lift up the oppressed.
Watch over the stranger and comfort the lonely.
Through our gifts, may we do likewise.
In the name of Christ the Comforter, we pray. Amen”

Reversing His Direction, His Life

Redeemed by Christ
changing his path
reversing his direction
the course of his life

No longer persecuting
those of the Way
leading others to Christ
all of his days

Saved from his path
turned right around
confronting the risen Christ
told of the error of his ways

Preaching salvation,
offering the forgiveness of sin
sharing the good news
of God’s healing grace

Calling the Other Sheep

His life, his charge
to go to the world
called to find other sheep
to share the message
the love of our God
going to the ends of the earth

So we are called
in our time and place
to continue the work of the Lord
to seek open hearts
for the message of God
his love so deep
his grace for you and me

Not bound by the law
the ancient code
freed from sin and death
our price already paid
by Christ on the cross
his hand offered to those who believe
only to follow to be saved
