kindling flames

growing embers,
nurturing the Spirit
kindling flames
new congregations
new communities
rising where there is need
fulfilling the commission
when we truly believe

growing fire

growing fire
nurturing flames
in the nursery, the factory
in God’s time
the shoot of the Spirit
kindled and woven
rising from ashes
embers kept alive

rising from their ashes – v2

rising from their ashes
living embers safeguarded
cared for, nurtured
God’s breath blowing
a murmur, a promise
that they may yet be a fire
God’s promise to be with us
life remaining within the ashes
the nascent church, new plantings
kindled in another place
rising from the earth

calming the frightened deer – v2

eyes of our clients
panic in the hallway
steps of the court
as an animal, a deer
caught in the woods
nowhere to run
wolves on the hunt

not knowing what to do
only wanting to run
calming frightened deer
to bring them back
regaining some composure
some semblance they are human
supposedly governed

by reason, by thought
yet for an instant propelled
back eons of life, ancient
returning to a more primitive state
where law has no meaning
not knowing what to do
only wanting to run

from the remains of other fires

the embers, the ashes,
living flames inside them
the fire of the Spirit
yet kindled within

from the remains of other fires
all gathered in, collected
from these sources, ripples, seeds,
new flames to begin

using embers to make fire

a holy alchemy, of love divine
using embers to make fire
offering their gifts
being salt to the earth

holy living embers
touching new lives
sown seeds in the soil
life burning bright

her testimony

her testimony in her actions
rushing to Christ
to wash his holy feet
her tears her witness of love
her hands, her hair
imparting soothing
healing his suffering
preparing him for his journey
her offering of love

pouring out her cup of tears

not withholding a drop
her tears an offering
not collected for another time
pouring out her cup of tears
upon the feet of Christ
consecrating them with the water
deep within her soul
her hair the towel
making the moment whole

Go Therefore

hard words, stuck in granite
a people of this place
reticent, taciturn
bound in love
home in our history
home in this land
the words, “Go, therefore”,
hard for us to hear
