Released – v3
I
could hardly believe it
but
it is so typical
in
this land of plenty;
There
are two kinds of healthcare
for
the haves and have nots
He
was released, discharged
aches
unexplained
before
he was ready;
Caught
in the cracks
the
gaps in the system
He
was sent home with questions
an
incomplete diagnosis;
Pushed
to the curb
for
a lack of insurance
sent
home too soon
Now
comes working,
a
graveyard shift before him,
the
clock still ticking;
Hoping
there won’t be a crisis
on
the weekend
during
the holidays

No parent scared – v2
no parent scared
no child uncovered
healthcare for our nation
no one left out
Expanding the programs
so all have access
all have insurance
to meet their needs
no parent scared
no child uncovered
healthcare for our nation
no one left out
Expanding our vision
our care for our neighbors
all should be protected
none should know want

All of them covered – v2
Shame on our nation
compromise hurting
choosing other battles
leaving them unprotected
All of our children,
their parents, our people
needing to be secure
safe within themselves
All of them covered
that is the mission
a challenge to this nation
this place, this dream
America better
than our politics would mirror
too many hurting
left behind with no help
Our nation should rally
giving voice to this need
all should be healthy
no matter their means

Help Beyond Their Reach
An indictment, in this land of plenty
so many, of us, equally
Uninsured, needing services
falling between the cracks
help beyond their reach
living on the streets,
prisoners, in fear
of what may come
More, far more,
meager coverage
most of us
knowing one accident, illness
could lead to the poorhouse
Something wrong
in this land of plenty
prayers lifted up
that all would be covered
that none would fear the future
for want of insurance
that all would know peace
the love of their neighbor
in this Lenten season
following the Christ
February 17, 2010 and February 18, 2010
Pastoral Prayer
Ash Wednesday Meditation
