Aurora – v2

Below the dome of the stars
in the frozen February sky
Pull over to the shoulder
my visible breath aglow…

Dancing lights, flickering stars
sway to the images, the movement,
stored on rods and cones,
Turquoise and ruby red grapefruit
Pale canary and pure blue…

The magic froze me for a while
separated from my journey
by the light show, the wonder,
echoes of the solar eruptions…

Marcy – v2

Pandora’s Box
Burst open
A year ago today
Because you gave us an assignment
To read a poem.

I took a risk.
And was rewarded
Beyond measure.

A silent voice
Spoke for the very first time
Clear and strong and with something to share
Of beauty, of imagery, of strong emotion

Words pouring out
Through a crack in the dam
Of my heart
Wanting to be heard and seen
Hoping to touch others as
They feel what I reveal,
Free to be
Who I am

New sensations
Pure emotions
Finding form and shape
On the printed page,
Letting me breathe new air
Learning to live.

Swains – revised – v2

Life is more simple
Sitting in my canoe.
Strokes in the water propel me forward.
I chart my course around the cove.
Stress melts away.

The paddle bites into the tawny depths.
Shafts of light illuminate the newborn waves.
Wind and wave push back.
I tack into the breeze.

Muscles turn to the task at hand.
Shoulder and forearm,
Biceps and back, falling to
Familiar work, instinctive in time.
Left, right.
Alternating sides of the hull.
A ribbon of water streams off the feathered blade.

A beaver dives into the cove.
We glide together toward the bridge.
He and I know the way.
Measured distance preserves the spell.

An army of turtles drop into the lake,
Escape their only defense.
Each on their own, a ballet in the water;
A slow elongated dive, glinting in
The reflected light.

Silence in my own little world,
Water, wind, muscle, motion,
Form and function as one.

Panorama of a sunset,
Purple, lilac, amber and gold.
Clouds and pine outline the sky.
Ripples on the water shimmer with the failing light.
The trill of the loon, haunting and pure.

Goldfinch, oriole, grackle join the chorus,
Bullfrog and cricket too.
Heron and osprey soar overhead.
A halo of blackflies silhouetted on the sky.
A fly kisses the surface.

On shore once again,
My canoe back in its place.
Life is simpler, still
After a paddle on Swains.

Autumnal Diorama – v2

Early morning
Crisp Air

Gray ridged bark
Green lawn, leaf clutter
Kicked underfoot

Wisps of fog off the pond

Green trees
Orange trees
Juxtaposed

Splash of sunlight
world aglow

Clouds pasted
For accent

Backdrop of blue
Pure, unblemished, unbroken

Screens, curtains, stage sets
Transparency overlays

Layers placed
Scene set

Crayola Morn – v2

Smell the bold colors,
Their scent rich in my nostrils,
Illuminated on the branches before me as I drive.
Low sunlight piercing the dawn behind me
Pulling me west on a Crayola morn’

McIntosh red and day lily yellow
Blood crimson and pumpkin orange
Cinder simmering on the stove
A stick of cinnamon crunched underfoot
A fragrance unfurled

Fall hues on God’s pallet
Memory of construction paper leaves,
Cut with blunt-dull scissors,
Mashed potato paste we used
To make our masterpieces
For the kitchen refrigerator

Malleable colors from the big box
Sharpener in the side, thick with shards, shavings
Clear evidence of familiarity, of use;
Peeling the label back, concentrating
To get the fine point
To stay within the lines

Crisp air, pale blue brightening,
Hard shadows falling, fading;
Cirrus on the horizon, bright sun in my rearview
Dead leaves on the yellow line;
Taste of vivid color on the wind
Stark in their fleeting purity

Snow Glazed – v2

The world, the grass, the roads
the woods, were all
snow glazed, laced,
trimming, coated, in white
a foretaste of winter

a bit cleaner, more pure
in the patina of winter
covering the world
with a thin film, a dusting,
in the first snow of the year

By the Waters

Rest, given by the shepherd
under his protection
into that green pasture
by the waters, living waters
clear, pure, calling our spirits

Peace within us
within our beating hearts
abundant grace
flowing over me, over
my head, down my beard, my collar
washing me clean,
to that place of rest

Walking beside, following the shepherd
through our journey of fait
once we too have heard His call
answered his offer of life
cleaving to our maker,
our savior, our all
resting where he leads
into the fields
by the still waters

Psalm 23 (King James Version)
1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the
paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil:
for thou art with me;
thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me
in the presence of mine enemies:
thou anointest my head with oil;
my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy
shall follow me all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Authentic

A pure, honesty, authentic
human encounter
looking at each other
squarely in the eye
Asking for his daily bread
for alms by which to live
Getting an offering of healing
a gift of saving, offered
in the name of Jesus Christ
Healed by the power of his name
by the power of his acts
by the authority given by God
to all who serve in his name

Call to Worship:
Let us praise God, the creator of heaven and Earth.
Let us seek God with open minds and open hearts.
May we feel the Holy spirit among us.
As the Scriptures are read and the Word proclaimed,
as prayers and music are offered, may we receive with
joy and thanksgiving what is offered for us.
Unison Prayer:
Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all
desires known, and from you no secrets are
hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the
inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may love
you with our whole self, and worthily praise your
holy name. Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Luke 7:17-22
Prayer of Dedication:
Loving God, the giver of all that is good; our lives
are blessed daily by your gifts. Help us to receive
your gifts with such gratitude, that we will be giving,
as you are to us. We pray that through us the whole
world will know the gift of your generous love in
Jesus Christ, the one who gave his life for us, and for
the whole world.

rich, saturated, pure

heavy, intoxicating fragrance

the purest color, purple
deep beyond description

The Family of God

We are children, adopted
redeemed into the family of God
Father, Son and Spirit
and each one of us, heirs
members of the family
entering in, by water,
by the Spirit, burned clean
washed pure, redeemed by his blood
entering in, to the loving arms of the creator
journeying, yoked to the savior, forgiven
led by the calling of the Spirit
indwelling within each loving heart
beating within each member
of the family of God

Sermon - "Reborn, The Spirit Within Us" - given at Advanced Lay Speaker Class, April 18, 2009

Prayer

Almighty Creator of Heaven and Earth, I pray that You, who gave your Son for our reconciliation with You, would grant me peace and a heart open to Your call this day, so that you may speak through me the words that you would have me share with Your people.

We pray that Your Spirit would grow within us, giving us the strength and faith to persevere though the trials of our lives. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of our spirits be pleasing to You our rock and our redeemer, and we pray all of these things in the strong name of the Risen Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Reborn, The Spirit Within Us

Today is Trinity Sunday, so named to celebrate one God in three persons, revealed to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; Creator and Sustainer, Redeemer, and Guide. It is the First Sunday or Ordinary Time, the Season after Pentecost, which ends with Christ the King Sunday, the last Sunday of the Christian year, before the start of the beginning of Advent.

Just as we shout, proclaim Christ’s resurrection on Easter morning, just as we are fired by the Flames of Pentecost, there is nothing Ordinary about the Trinity!
The idea of Father, Son, and Spirit, gives a richness to our faith, to help us to comprehend the infinite in more discernible ways. When we call out to God the Father, it is the Spirit within us speaking, crying out to our Father, and when we invoke the name of our redeemer, the risen Lord, Jesus Christ, we are completing the triangle, because he is our brother.

(How awesome it that!)

The scripture passages this morning include some of my favorite pieces of scriptures.

1. In Romans 8:12-17, in his letter to the Romans, Paul proclaims our adoption into God’s family as heirs to the riches of Heaven, to life eternal, with our brother, the risen Lord, Christ Jesus. With a spirit of Adoption, a loving Father taking us into his fold, calling us by name, as he wished from the beginnings of the earth.

2. In Isaiah 6:1-8 One of the bible’s greatest answers to the calling of God, where he said simply, “Here I am; send me!”, which is the title of a poem I wrote.

A prophet answering
the direct call to action
by the Lord God Jehovah
to bring truth to the people
foretell a trial they must face
Whom shall I send?
Here I am; send me!

Oh that we could be so bold, so confident, so faithful, as Abraham, as Isaiah, as Paul, each called by God, each going where God willed.

and

3. We have the words of our Savior, trying to speak to the deaf, trying to show the blind Sanhedrin Nicodemus the revolutionary thought, that we must be reborn, of the Spirit, that the water and the Spirit are needed for a true baptism into the faith, in the wonderful, magnificent passages in John 3:1-17.

What Nicodemus could not even begin to understand, the living Christ in his presence, Isaiah proclaimed, the glory of God’s heavenly court. Can you see it, can you picture the imagery Isaiah’s song creates? Can you visualize the hem of his robe, filling the temple? (pause) I was gifted with a poem, The Hem of the Robe, which reads,

Like shafts of light, woven together;
sheets of flowing luminous light
like a wall of falling water
a curtain of silent thundering rain
so must the hem of his robe have been
filling His Temple on earth
flowing down from his heavenly throne
down from high above
filling the temple with light

Isaiah was redeemed and reborn, by his answer. He was living by the Spirit. Isaiah was reborn, as surely as any who have followed. He was redeemed, reborn of the Spirit.

Isaiah was transformed, not by his action; but by the grace of God. Not justified by the Law; but by confessing his sin, submitting his body, his all, to the voice of God, an indwelling of God’s Spirit within him.

Unlike Nicodemus, the unwise teacher, this member of the Sanhedrin, Isaiah was able to see the throne room of God, was able to gain even a glimpse of the Creator’s glory. Nicodemus was blinded by his station, by the Law. He spoke with the same unclean lips as Isaiah.

Where Isaiah was transformed, changed, his unclean lips burned away… Listen to the words of this poem, Burned Away

A live coal in the grasp
of a six-winged seraph
a burning ember of
a sacrifice
touched to the seer’s lips
sin scorched away
so truth could pour forth
untainted and pure
for the nation of God

Nicodemus, coming to Christ in the dark of night, could not.
Even with the Messiah, the living Word of God, the Son of God speaking truth to power, speaking directly to him, he would not see. He could not understand the truth, revealed to him in the words of Christ in the lesson in the Gospel of John.
Nicodemus could not offer himself; he was not redeemed. He was stuck in his place, in the trap of trying to live, to measure himself with the Law. He could not understand and did not want to lose his position, his authority. To be reborn, of the Spirit, that meant everything of his past was loss, as surely as Paul proclaimed in Philippians 3:7 that, after his encounter with the risen Christ on the Road to Damascus, all his gain was viewed as loss.

What Christ was telling him, oh if he could have only understood… I wonder if it is like this poem, written when I read this scripture almost 2 years ago.

He is the one who said it

A minor epiphany
at the dinner table tonight,
reading the devotional
the familiar story, the
wondrous words, of God’s love
“For God so loved the world
that he gave his only begotten son”
Words that nourish, that uplift
that remind us of the Father,
the parent; But, the context,
the speaker, is the story
This is Jesus proclaiming
the love of God in giving
Himself, to save us
this broken world
by His presence on Earth
without mincing words,
with no sugar coating.
I am here, on his earth
because the father loved, loves
will always love
the living Son,
proclaiming
the Father’s
love

There are so many times in the gospels when Jesus seems to be speaking to “Duh-sciples”. How this conversation must have seemed to him.

Beyond His Ken

Like a professor
explaining theoretical physics
to a wide-eyed preschooler,
so must it have been
the divine and the human
Meaning, full nuanced meaning
lost on the listeners
stuck within the here, the now
understanding only the heard, the seen
Nothing beyond his ken
All of us needing that
singular expert witness,
and repeated instruction

And we, using the scripture from Romans, are each called to be born of the Spirit, to live as Isaiah did, redeemed by the grace of God, our lives turned toward the Father, yoked to the Son, walking, sharing, witnessing, with the power, the authority of those flames of Pentecost that we heralded in worship last week.
Heirs with our brother, to the kingdom of God, called as He was, to listen to the Spirit, indwelling within us.

Oh, I pray that we, that you and I , can answer as boldly as Isaiah when we are called by God the Creator - reborn of the Spirit, living as children of God, as the brothers and sisters of Christ.

Here I am, Send Me!

Amen.

The Shadow of Death

Under the shadow of death
the watchful eye of fate
he walked to the place of the skull, Golgotha
Innocent, pure, an unblemished life,
hanging on a cross, three criminals
ridiculed, mocked, but forgiving all
for the ignorance of man
promising a gift of grace
a place in paradise
for one who would ask
even under the shadow of death

Sermon - "Fire Walker", by Pastor Ruth L. Foss, Suncook United Methodist Church, February 22, 2009

Isaiah 43:1-10
New Living Translation

(Video ‘Consuming Fire”)

(Reading of the Scripture from Isaiah New Living Translation)

Prayer:

Holy, Loving, Compassionate, Almighty God…We thank you for Your word. We pray that your Spirit would fall down upon us. We ask for the Spirit of discernment…of knowledge…of wisdom. We pray that we would have ears to hear, eyes to see and a willing spirit as we listen for what you would say to us today. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be pleasing to you O Lord, our Rock and Redeemer. May your message be heard through me or in spite of me. Speak Lord for your servants are listening. Amen.

Have you ever seen the movie “Fire Starter” with Jodie Foster and Kurt Douglas? Boy that was such an action packed movie. It’s a story of a little girl who has this gift…she can start fires with her mind. Everyone wanted to capture her so they could harness her gift for themselves. In one scene…she starts this fire…all you can see is fire all over the place…everything is all ablaze. Then…out of the fire…you see her coming out of the fire. She is not getting burned as she walks through. It’s almost as if the fire itself gave way for her walking through.

This scene in the movie reminds me of the scripture from Isaiah 43 this morning. Walking through fire and not getting burned…walking through the waters and not being overcome by them. I don’t know about you but I have had my share of walking through situations that feel like I am walking through fire. It seemed like every situation around me was a test to see what I would do. And if you are like me…I would rather not have to go through these times in my life. Some have been caused by what I have done and some are caused by what others have done…either way…you feel lost and alone as you go through the fire. You feel as if you will be consumed by the fire from below. You stand there…looking up to heaven…and say, “God…where are you? Why can’t I feel you? I need you! Save me!” But what you hear is silence…hopelessness.

But in the Isaiah passage (and many others) there is hope. In verse five God says, “Do not be afraid…I am with you…” I…am…with you…and not only is God with us but in verse ten God says, “But you are my witnesses…You are my servant. You have been chosen to know me, believe in me, and understand that I alone am God.” We are witnesses, servants and chosen…we have hope! We are precious, honored and loved! Our God is the God of comfort, of compassion, of peace and of hope and joy. There is hope and strength in the Lord our God.

Ok…so may ask…why do we have to go through these trials…why do we have to go through this “Fire Walking 101” any way? What good is it any way? What do these times hope to produce? Well I think I may have figured out a piece of this mystery. We go through this fire so that the things in us that need to be consumed…the things that need to be changed in our lives in order to live it to the fullest…what God had intended for us. This fire also brings us closer to God. We have to rely on God grace and love in order to “make it through to the other side. But when we make it through to the other side…we are not the same…we are closer to the image that God intends for us…what God planned for us since the beginning of time.

Uh…OK…it’s like this…Ray gave me a copy of what he found on the internet about the “Refiners Fire”. There was a story on the web site therefinersfire.org. The story goes something like this,

“Some time ago, a few ladies met in a certain city to read the scriptures, and make them the subject of conversation. While reading the third chapter of Malachi they came upon a remarkable expression in the third verse: "And He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver." One lady's opinion was that it was intended to convey the view of the sanctifying influence of the grace of Christ. Then she proposed to visit a silversmith and report to them what he said on the subject.

She went accordingly and without telling the object of her errand, begged to know the process of refining silver, which he fully described to her. "But Sir" she said, "do you sit while the work of refining is going on?" "Oh, yes, madam," replied the silversmith; "I must sit with my eye steadily fixed on the furnace, for if the time necessary for refining be exceeded in the slightest degree, the silver will be injured."

The lady at once saw the beauty, and comfort too, of the expression, "He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver." Christ sees it needful to put His children into a furnace; His eye is steadily intent on the work of purifying, and His wisdom and love are both engaged in the best manner for them. Their trials do not come at random; "the very hairs of your head are all numbered."

As the lady was leaving the shop, the silversmith called her back, and said he had forgotten to mention that the only way that he knows when the process of purifying is complete when he sees his own image reflected in the silver....”

God uses these times…this refining fire of our lives. Through these times our rough edges are smoothed. God allows these times so that we can be made into the image of Christ from glory to glory until God sees His reflection in us…but..not just for His viewing…oh no…others will also see His refection in us. The fire doesn’t consume the masterpiece but the impurities that lay within…below the surface. We are not consumed but this consuming fire brings us closer to our God and creator, and fills us with the Spirit of strength and enables us to withstand even the hottest oven.

Beloved…are you feeling as if you are going through a “Walk in the Fire”? Has life gotten you to the point that you just can’t take the fire anymore? Have the situations in your life got you on the “hot seat”? Take heart in knowing that the Eternal source of Peace is there with you…sitting by the furnace to be sure His masterpiece is not injured or destroyed. Beloved daughter and son…the source of deliverance and help is not far…even when you don’t feel Him there…waiting for the right time so that you may shine as the purest refined silver…to Him be the glory both now and forever.

Let us pray:
Creative source of all being, Almighty God, You who are the creator of all that is good and pleasing…help us, we pray, as we go through the Fires of life. Give us strength and endurance through these times so that we may shine with your image for all the world to see. May we be consumed with a passion for you and your will for our lives. Pour out your Pentecost fire upon us gathered here so that we may be ignited again and able to withstand the fires of this world. Revive us again. We pray this in the name of the perfector of our faith, our Lord Jesus Christ, through the Holy Spirit. All honor and glory is yours now and forever.
Amen

Walking in the Fires

In the fires, walking through the flames
unburned, whole, protected on the journey
walking in the waters, in the flames
the Lord beside me in the trials
guiding my steps, refining me
burning off that which isn’t needed,
the chaff, the burrs, the sharp edges
New creations, closer to God,
refined, made reflections of Christ
through the flames, purified,
made clean and pure, sanctified
through our walking through the fires
his eyes upon us, each step of the way

For Eternal Riches

His sacrifice, his life given
so that we would have eternal riches
life with our father, our God
walking as Adam walked
face to face with our creator
God’s offering, the sin sacrifice
the pure unblemished lamb
offered on the altar of the cross
forgiving all our wrongs
trading death for eternal riches

The Lamb – haiku – 1

pure, unblemished
the lamb, sacrificed, God
the Son for our Sin

Salvation

For the world, for each of us
he brought salvation, the offer of grace
sealing the rift
the chasm between God and man
the willfulness, the consequences
choosing the other way

Filling the gap with his body, his blood
bearing the weight alone
carrying that which we cannot
his sacrifice, holy and pure
worthy, sufficient
for all time
