Lifted up by our Savior
Given to him for the masses
meager fare for the people
our bodies, our lives
lifted up by our Savior
Knowing so well
what it means to sacrifice
to give of ourselves
to give ourselves to God
He was the One
who descended from heaven
who would raise himself up
in the upper room
Lifted up by our Savior
our lives for the people
to be broken so they would be fed
at a time of God’s choosing

Food for their spirits
sharing the good news
offering life everlasting
new life in You

in despair

in the dark of our walk

more than those who guard the city

from out of our despair
our sense of death
estranged from God
other people, ourselves
we come to God
falling to our knees
in cries so deep
hear us; believe,
trust in the Lord
God will provide
all that we need
far more than survive
trust in his grace
in his forgiveness, in love
give up control
yield to his touch

from death to life
from despair to hope
from hope promise
from the pit the heights
God will provide
all our blessings
turn unto Him
He will not forget us
God will lift us
from the pit, to salvation
redeemed, restored
into communion
from death to life
hope in his promise
he will be faithful
to the end of time

knowing He will answer
the desires of our heart
that he will redeem us
from death to life

By the life of Christ,
his walk here on earth,
we are redeemed, esteemed,
brought back from the pit
from the exile of death
into new life
by Christ’s living, his dying,
his rise to new life
We join with him

dwell on his life
this is our hope
our model for living

Jesus’ Eyes – v2
Whatever He looked like,
and we aren’t told,
she paused, almost sighing,
“He must have had
beautiful eyes”
Eyes to be drunk in,
along with his message
of equality, of love
Warm gentle eyes, of our Savior,
looking tenderly into your soul
our young bachelor servant king
Eyes of the one with so many women followers
in a time when women weren’t seen
or heard in the gate, the marketplace,
Revealing himself to them alone
in shimmering light
Planting himself in
their good, fertile soil
enraptured, sitting at his feet
longing to be with him
and his giving eyes

Paradise Sunset – v2
The sky morphing, changing
from a pure royal blue,
to an earthy spectrum of rust
pale canary yellow,
bleeding to burgundy and finally cobalt
A sudden sunset between
the twin pitons, before us
their presence the center
of the whole tableau
The warm leeward breath
kissing us, our group,
rising up from the ocean’s surface
wafting up the jagged slope
of the volcanic ridge
Rich lush greens, the jungle
sweet fragrance on the tropical breeze
Air wet at dusk, around us
falling through the dewpoint
Dark wrapping us like a blanket
looking out on the now placid sea.
Weak light of civilization
hidden behind,
beyond the road below.

A Ripeness of Winter – v2
Frozen in her icy grip
captured in this frigid stillness
coated layer by layer
a blanket of white, of steel grey
a world in cocoon, caught in squall, in fury
in the cold, soundless murmur
a hidden ripeness in slumber
Held in abeyance, ready to burst forth
in thaw and rebirth
Look carefully, see the maple’s nascent sprig,
Poised for spring, for the smell of its flowering
Feel the warming of the sun after the solstice
hope in the lengthening days
The smell of wood fire, the dance of its flames
Still in January the crunch of boots,
a squeal of bitter cold snow
an artic moment fixed in this wintry chill
Lost in the brisk clear air, trapped,
everywhere her grip holds sway
Waiting impatiently for the blooming
of the new season, foreshadowed, yet
encased in the frosty ripeness of winter.

Mountains in the Sky
A majestic range of mountains
Hues of plum, rose, and rust
hover above the terrestrial hills
cloaked in winter’s gray, brown, and white
shapes frozen in the air
over the cold, still earth
captured clouds of dust and smoke
of water and ice, become solid
colored by the master’s brush
splashed with royal blues
marching across the sky
more solid than we would think
moving to nature’s tune
dancing in the air

from exile to life
to restored communion
this is the transition, the transformation
all that God offers, what he promises
if we turn to him, to trust
to wait for the Lord
our cries will be answered
even those which aren’t, which cannot
be spoken out loud
to heal us, to restore us
from our brokenness into wholeness
restored by the love of God
