being the humble servant
serving Judas, serving Peter,
washing the feet of the disciples
of those who would betray Him,
those who would run away...
 
washing the feet of those
who would betray,
those who would hurt us,
putting Christ’s towel upon us
to wash their feet...
 
embracing His message of service,
of bringing others to Him
donning the mantle of servanthood,
of kneeling before our neighbor
to offer them Jesus Christ...

Before the cross, the Passion,
Before He washed His disciples' feet
even the feet of Judas, of Peter,
the one who betrayed Him,
the one who denied Him
all those who ran away...
 
Even before the manger,
His birth in a lowly stable
Christ became mortal
leaving eternity
a kernel of heaven
in Mary’s womb...
 
Fully God but fully Man,
folded into the smallest seed of humanity,
listening to the heartbeat of Mary,
Jesus, our Lord and Savior
As we were in the secret place
formed in our mother's womb...
 
A kernel of heaven
inside the bounds of time
living as we do, mortal,
nine months of quiet, of waiting,
Every child before they are born,
like our risen Lord and Savior...

Mary and Martha,
whom Jesus loves...
 
the rabbi coming
Martha running to Him,
professing her faith
believing His identity...
 
a cloud of witnesses
cloistered around Mary
while sitting shiva
Lazarus bound in a tomb...
 
leaving their house
walking with the grieving Mary
with her when Jesus
calls Lazarus from the tomb...
 
a cloud of witnesses
facing the power of Jesus...
God here in the flesh
raising the dead to life...
 
no denying the miracle
the removing of his garments
Lazarus alive, breathing,
the air of Jesus’ healing...

proving the omnipotence of Jesus
a stark choice to raise
Lazarus from the death...
 
A miracle like no other,
closing off denial,
a denial of His identity
proving He is God...
 
The intensity building
the exigency of this moment
destiny calling to Christ
to die, to rise from the dead...

God cried, Jesus wept,
He was grieved in His Spirit,
He loved Lazarus,
But He loved us more.
Christ let His friend die...
 
God, cried, Jesus wept,
His heart was burdened with sorrow,
But He raised him from the dead,
To show us His power,
To bring the Godhead Glory...
 
God cried, Jesus wept,
While Caiaphas planned evil...
The march toward Passover,
To the Sanhedrin, to the cross...
Had already begun...
 
God cried, Jesus wept,
Light walked in the darkness,
But we need to make a choice,
We must be like those there
We must believe in Jesus...

Believe in Jesus, in resurrection –
We are redeemed from death –
We are raised from the dead,
We rise from our tombs...
 
Our joy should be complete...
We must believe, dream bigger...
We have a new life in Christ
Now and in heaven, alive,
We walk in His light...
 
We have all the signs we need
We are new creations, risen,
We walk out of our tombs
At the cry of Jesus...
We choose to believe...

to our heavenly home...
 
We can condemn ourselves
embracing eternal damnation
We are given hope
in the sacrifice of Christ...
 
But we can stay in our sin
We choose our destiny
the eternal gift of glory
or Hell’s bitter flames...

Eighty when I was eight

Sixty-five when dad turned twenty-one,
Eighty when I was eight,
My grandfather a regal presence,
A smile upon his face…
 
Life was simpler then,
His fedora in the closet,
Sitting in his presence
Sharing a meal on Sunday…
 
Driver for the Cookie-Lady,
Violets for the shut-ins,
Together they built a life,
One hundred and ten years ago…

giving to the chisel – v4

We turn to the Master
our marble compliant,
giving to the chisel,
the hammer, to His hands,
the work of the Sculptor;
Our hardened clay compliant, returning,
climbing back onto the Potter’s wheel.
 
We submit to the Potter,
to the one true Creator,
to His touch of love, of mercy,
His hand of teaching, correction,
trusting His urgings, His calling;
We give to the hammer, the chisel,
we choose to submit, to yield.
 
We come to the forge,
the hammer, the anvil,
giving our bodies, our lives over
to the Creator, the Smithy,
offering to bend, to change,
to conform to His teaching;
We follow Christ’s way
in submission to God.

Because of #Love, #Submission

Because of Love, submission,
giving himself to the will of the Father
Christ chose to become the Servant,
there in the Garden of Gethsemane
opening His heart to God
being brutally honest, human,
yet Christ chose to die to set us free.

Because of Love - v4

It was not the nails, the spikes,
the charges, the flogging,
the lash, the crown, the chains
that held Christ in His Passion;
Love held Jesus to our cross.
 
Because of Love, submission,
Christ chose to become the Servant,
to drink of the cup, to suffer,
to climb our cross;
Christ chose to die for all of us.
 
By Grace, we are saved
by the infinite love of our Savior,
by God's unmerited favor,
Christ's agape love;
The Lamb gave us life.

Because of Love - v3
