each cut on the slicer,
a sizzle, a hiss, a murmur...
the whiz each incoming round,
before the concussion,
hitting the front-line position...
each receding tide
pulled by the moon...
 
the hiss of the meat
its cohesion releasing,
quickly cut for commerce...
bullets before striking the ground...
Every wave returning
pulled back into the ocean
with a similar sound wave...
 
the incongruity of awareness
minds reeling in attention
visualizing a susurration...
the common reverberations...
the oscillation, waves of sounds -
capturing my imagination,
a symmetry, connecting the dots...

The hiss of the meat
 
This poem was scribbled right after I cut some prosciutto
at the deli counter last night. (And I had thought about the sound
when I had cut different kinds of ham in the past).
The sound of the meat being cut immediately
reminded me of the sound of bullets before impact in Ukraine
and the sound of receding tides, the susurration over the sand...

Like a #wren cartwheeled across the roadway #poetry #God #creation #imagination #leaf #wind #dancing #Dumbo

An image of the black crow friends of Dumbo,

a memory of my childhood, a smile…

driving, enchanted, a dry oak leaf,

like a wren cartwheeled

across the lanes of the roadway

seeing its legs, its feet, its wings,

tumbling, caught in the puff of breath,

lifted against the wind right to left…

But a moment of imagination

an epiphany of wonder

The brown-dry leaf given agency,

tumbling over the macadam,

as if caught in that lifeforce

the power of the spirit

the air alive, a gift, evocative,

in the brightness of the January stillness…

A living rainforest – v2

A gift of the Creator,
my eyes open to wonder
to the magic of this moment,
to stop, to lean in
to see more clearly,
treasure in the little…
drawn to beauty,
that surrounds us all…
 
Down on my knees
drawn by vibrant color
a living rainforest
down below the tops
of the wheat stalks
of the grasses…
verdant green calling,
putting on my glasses…
 
Living chartreuse,
shimmering in the sunlight,
the new grass of spring,
now towering over me,
almost iridescent, alive,
drawing me inward,
to live, to explore, richly,
in this precious moment…

A living rainforest

Down on my knees
drawn by vibrant color
a living rainforest
down below the tops
of the wheat stalks
of the grasses…
verdant green calling,
putting on my glasses…
 
Living chartreuse,
shimmering in the sunlight,
the new grass of spring,
now towering over me,
almost iridescent, alive,
drawing me inward,
to live, to explore, richly,
in this precious moment…

who i am - v2

who I am, in this world,

who I long to be, in this life,

is made known, revealed,

in the words I am gifted,

the words God gives to me…

all that I am, truly 

all I strive to be, on my heart,

is entwined with scripture,

with God’s calling,

God’s purpose for me…

who I am, deep within, 

my authentic self, revealed,

captured from the ether,

from the whispers I hear,

the words I write down… 

all that I am, my hopes and dreams,

woven into the fabric, the thread,

of God’s speaking to me,

in His whispers of love, of grace,

in the words He gives me to share...

who I am,

Seeds planted into the universe – v4

Seeds held in my mind, in my spirit, in my hands,
Typing even these words, from where I do not know,
Wanting to become alive, to rise from the ether, rising,
To be released, to find fertile soil, yearning to grow,
To rise into the light of day, to be anchored in human hearts…
 
Words rising in my mind, within my spirit, awakening,
urgently crying to be released, to be heard, spoken,
for someone who needs to hear them, to find them, to heal,
words tossed from my hands into the gossamer, the ether,
to be caught by the air, the wind, eternal spirits…
 
Seeds sown, planted into the universe, the zeitgeist,
released from my mind, my spirit, my broken vessel,
not knowing where they will land, become planted,
how they will germinate, how they may be received,
how they may touch others’ lives, important…
 
For that is not for me to know, in truth, to ponder,
to worry about how they may be received, to be honest,
I must release them from my spirit, into existence,
the words themselves existing, powerful, authentic,
offering hope, light, love to feed the world…

Words rising in my mind, within my spirit, awakening,

for someone who needs to hear them, to heal,

Conjured from the ether, our vision,
from my imagination, my ken,
looking into infinity, possibility,
in the depths of my coffee cup…
 
A starry night, an endless treasure,
my senses opened so wide,
drinking his mighty brushstrokes,
within every sip, more alive…
 
Endless possibilities, of dreams,
to drink, to linger over, to taste,
within the bottomless cup, the froth,
in the depths of my coffee cup…

Holding onto #Time – v2

Gazing off toward the rising light
catching my eager eyes, morning,
a trunk, not yet fallen, erect, in death,
a regal birch remains, ramrod straight…
 
Beyond the edge of this still glade,
illumined by the morning sunlight,
poison ivy climbing up its truck,
fungus tiered up its side,
nests of birds dwelling inside…
 
No longer are there limbs,
yet worthy none the less,
the regal birch within the glade
has yet much to teach to us…
 
Standing through life’s trials,
ever changing, still usefulness,
teaching us about life, aging,
of living within community,
and accepting the part we play…

A dogwood grew over there - v2

The front of our old house so sterile,
siding where clapboards were,
not like I remember it, alive, part of us,
stout bushes rising up to the windows,
verdant grasses, flagstones in the walk,
where there is now cement only,
curved where it was straight...
blue paint where there was white,
remembering scraping and sanding,
To get the painting just right…

The pool she always wanted consumed,
filled the back yard, where we once played,
a maple stood in the margin, the verge,
between the sidewalk and the road,
a dogwood grew over there, to the left,
a treasure of our mother, the blossoms,
tending her hens and chickens, edging,
crushed marble stones around its base,
her one jack-in-the-pulpit hidden,
Under the bushes, around to the right…

We are drawn to her

We know her, don’t we
if not her, so many others,
so many who have come before,
who have come before the mirror,
the camera, who have fought back tears,
Who have struggled to gain their composure…
 
We see her, we know her, we all aspire to be her,
defiant in resolve, in purpose, regaining, reclaiming,
her dignity, her composure, her power over, peace,
to the enormity, agony of what she is facing, present,
this moment in her life, her sorrow, anguish, painful,
Not ceding this space, not empowering sorrow…
 
She was struggling to breathe, her composure,
before the camera, a mirror, breathing,
calming, stilling herself, resolving,
to defeat the demons crying,
like so many I have known,
We know, don’t we…
