Like the Wings of a Songbird

Like the wings of a songbird
the wood chips/driftwood
sitting on the sand
far from the shore
yet driftwood just the same
feathered and layered
replicating the design
the love of the creator
like the wings of the songbird
drawing our eyes
to the beauty of his hand

A Robin’s Egg Darker than Robin’s-Egg Blue

A deeper hue
darker and soothing
more like aqua or teal
the robin’s egg on the ground
noticed while I was mowing
set off against the earth
the lush green grass

A robin’s egg darker
than robin’s-egg blue
something amazing
a bit of wonder
magic in that moment
a bit of grace
poured out on me

A Starling Coming to Rest

Was it a starling coming to rest
on the front porch light
rising from drinking
from the gutter above the porch
hearing the cooing of the mourning dove

Walking back to the house
from the driveway
a conversation with a friend
the morning coming to life
under a sky of gray and white

Gathering the Fallen Nest

The gleanings of the pruning
that the trees would be more fruitful
a sprig of apple limbs
fallen to the ground

A tiny nest, on the branch
smaller than my daughter’s fist
resting on the hay

Gathering the fallen nest
nestled in my hands
to share with the girls when I get home
I can’t wait to see her face
