If you knew who I am

these words of Jesus
speaking in longing
for her eyes to be open
to believe in Him.
“If you knew who I am,
you would not thirst.”
He was the living water
sent to us in love;
He offered life to her
by Jacob’s well.

love my neighbor

not as me
not how I love myself
we are to love
as Christ loved us
love my neighbor
part of God’s family
with holy worthy
forgiving them
even as he died on the cross
forgiving me as well
Christ’s sacrifice the model
how we are to love
to love our neighbor not as ourselves
to love as God loves us

And who is my neighbor

The word of the scribe
the scholar of the law
his question to Christ
his way of keeping score
And who is my neighbor,
to whom the law applies,
seeking to hear the limits
who can I cast out
But the words of Christ
not of exclusion, not in the least
words of how to walk in life
to be a neighbor indeed

To whom can I be a neighbor

The question that the scribe could have asked
the one Jesus seemed to answer
To whom can I be a neighbor
how can I serve, who needs my help
where is there great need
This is the question of how to love
to share God’s grace in our life
how to share the blessings of God
our purpose in this walk

He took pity on him

This enemy of the people
a Samaritan, an outsider
stopping to help
where the others had walked by
He took pity on him
the man in the gutter
a stranger, a Jew, his enemy
on him he had compassion

Hope Murmured

In her eyes a whisper
in her mouth a murmur
redemption possible
in coming to know Christ

She is there
alone at the well
yet this lets her
speak to Christ himself

Her hope murmured
as a prayer breathed
from the depth of her soul
in him given life

Sadness in Her Eyes

The image of the woman
the weight of her years
sorrow in her face
the sadness in her eyes

Yet in her movement
the way she looks
Hope in this encounter
with Jesus at the well
