not stone by stone
not a house, a building,
Weaving a life together
with trembling hands
thread by thread
a cord, a picture appearing,
a puzzle with no image
coming into existence
by faith, through prayer,
believing in God’s presence,
a quickening of our flesh
together, united...
 
time precious, sacred,
breathing, speaking to each other
transparent, brave when we are able,
reaching for our other
across language, time, and space...
dipping cups, drinking richly
of our faith, our belief...
God guides our steps
He has brought us together...
two flawed souls,
with history and struggle -
Redeemed by His love...
 
thread by thread,
note by note,
the image, the melody,
the cord growing stronger
abiding with You
trusting in love,
the hand of providence
the hand of the Potter,
drawing us together
drawing us to Him,
making two hearts ready
making us one...

a way only to death
the call of the one
cheating on her spouse
leading only to destruction
leading to death…
 
no returning from this
from betrayal
cut off, unclean
no walking in the light
the path of life…
 
her sweet words enticing
wooing the weak
but only cancer, a trap,
leading only to destruction
leading to death.

My part of the world is waking,
from sleep, from frozen slumber,
light is breaking in the east,
where you, my love, are living…
 
The same sun warms us,
rising in the heavens, higher,
how I long to be with you,
to touch you, to feel
your warm embrace…
 
For now, there is this consolation,
my part of the world is waking,
I sing of our love together, stronger,
Even while we are yet miles apart…

our breath-prayer – v2

Our prayer between us,
in our promise together,
knowing in our spirits,
feeling God’s hand, His love,
poured out upon us…
 
In the crucible of this age,
uncertainty of these moments,
we share an eternal love,
a breath-prayer between us,
“I will love you until the day I die”.
 
So much power in these words,
this promise spoken between us,
but how much more joy there will be,
when we are united, my love, for eternity,
and we dance in the streets of heaven...
 
We long for the day, that moment,
when we live together, in love,
in the crucible of these days,
striving in our hearts,
with God by our side…

In the crucible of this age,

uncertainty of these moments,

we share an eternal love,

a breath-prayer between us,

“I will love you until the day I die”.

 

So much power in these words,

It wasn't that moment

when I met her at the church

The many times we chatted

in the after-church coffee hour

the cookies, the brownies,

she had made to share

No, not in our class,

each Tuesday night

Studying God’s Word

It was our first kiss,

that first time I held her

falling deep into her

warm brown eyes

Feeling her against me

Her lips against mine

Joining bodies, hearts and lives,

children, and a family,

with our first kiss

Awaken love

within my heart

our deepest desires

the sight of my lover

my senses aroused.

Awaken love

in the arms

of my beloved;

let me feel her close

our warm embrace.

drawing us closer

Counting Down – v2

Counting down to two years,

our moments of memories

of the start of our lives anew

the start of our dating, our courtship,

engagement, joining in marriage

soon to fall on the calendar, our shared

calendar of our shared life together

minutes, second, days, months, twenty-four hours

starting this month, tomorrow our first time

together, studying Your word, two weeks

and our first date.

So much joy in remembering that excitement,

the learning about one another

the revelation of children, beautiful girls

to spend time with you, with you all;

Exploring new feelings, parallel history,

odd, repeating, coincidences, curious

snippets of shared names, clustered hints

by the Creator of safety, belonging

two years like minutes, etched in our hearts

permanent marker, indelible ink

living on forever.

Uncomfortable Imagery – v3

The pastor knitted imagery

that didn’t quite go together

a bit incongruous, a bit distinct

images of the word, “uncomfortable”

of Scrooge, of the Grinch, a marriage

in trouble, a depressed elder,

waiting for death, alone,

feeling unworthy of Communion,

lamenting the ills of this world,

this time and place.

Musing on the image of John

standing hot and dirty

in the murky water, in camel hair,

cinched tight to his body,

eating locust, uncomfortable purity;

Preaching an uncomfortable word

in the hot desert, the wilderness

fulfilling the prophecy for his own life

the prophecy of the coming

of the child to ministry, to kingship,

of a very different kind of reign,

Finding hope, repentance, saving,

baptism, not so much in the dirty water itself

but in the place, the Jordan,

finding hope too in the frank words

the honesty of the man in the nursing home

the hope in the name of Scrooge, Ebenezer,

the stone that Samuel placed

in God’s provision, His saving of the people

long before even Isaiah’s prophecy

of the time that was to come.

Hope for a different future

in uncomfortable wrappers,

foreshadowing the problem

of comprehending Jesus, and his message

in society’s eyes, the eyes of the people

even to this day, in this moment

so different from our world

our wisdom, our comprehension

standing in the Jordan, watching Ebenezer

hope that we will change

in our time in this desert.
