Feeling a sense
doubly blessed
all of the joy
the wonderment
fulfillment of covenant
coming before God
under the winter sky
before our church family
to say our vows again
In the community
our friends and family
affirming our love
for one another
our commitment before God
to live as husband and wife
submitting to each other
in our house, to serve the Lord
going where he calls
to do our master’s work

With My Face Unveiled
My prayer, my hope
that I would come before the Lord
with my face unveiled
humbly, hopeful,
boldly before my king
By his hands created,
by his grace forgive,
by his love made whole
his spirit guiding me
as I walk upon the earth
Oh to come before him
at the end of my days
confident, though humble
entering the courts of God
with my face unveiled
singing praises to the king

The Hands of Grace
Held in his love
infinite, unending
the hands of grace
defining our creator
Amazing, beyond our abilities
to understand fully
the gift of God
holding us like a parent
Undeserving of his love
so freely given
held in the hands of grace
hope for life eternal

Children Before God
Willful, learning,
testing our place
all of us, the whole human race
Children before God
sometimes forgetting our place
Made of the stuff of clay
while he is eternal
thinking we can go it alone
though we are in no way able
his breath giving us life
By his grace,
his love, so incomprehensible
able to go to the throne
to enter into his presence
humbly, as children before God

The Stuff of Clay
Man, each of us
held in the potter’s hands
the stuff of clay alone
held in his hands
Children of the king
sheep of his flock
even when we rebel
stray into the dark
Called by our shepherd
back into the fold
his arms open wide
when we come back home
His grace alone
nothing we deserve
brings us into the family
brothers, sisters with our Lord

Graces
The little things
moments of assurance
when the world is smaller
peace comes upon our face
Not coincidences
but graces from the king
assurance of his presence
his plans for you and me
Comfort in feeling
that the world isn’t so big
connections with our brothers,
our sisters, all children of the king

Hide and Seek
Looking first toward the bus
looking for the girls
waving good bye
as they headed off to school
The sun bright, shining
peeking through the slate gray
the clouds not ready
to let it get away
Heading home
the clouds thickening
the sun outlined
through the screen
Like a game of
celestial hide and seek
the players dancing
across the sky

Not Exactly in Shadows
The color richer
somehow, because it was muted
not exactly in shadows
the sun behind dark clouds
Hiding in plain sight
not casting its light
the tulips alive
growing in the dimmed

Gripped by fears

causing him to sink
when he took his sights off Jesus
Afraid, still in the boat
choosing to follow

a ministry of giving
offering herself

her service to others
giving compassion

Blind to His Words
Not able to hear
to see the truth
blind to His words
identifying himself
The Christ before them
the living God
deaf, unable to see
for they did not belong to him
Only some, selected
the flock given to him
only the sheep hearing
the voice of the shepherd
All of us called
to be gathered to him
our choice to listen
of turn from the king

Ears Open
Unlike those questioning
unable to believe
needing to be told again
he was the Christ
Ears open, eyes to see
hearing the call of our master
leading us on our way
Following him all of our days
Safe in the community
called to be sheep of his flock
and shepherds for his kingdom
leading others to him
as our common, holy commission

Not Stopping When I Should Have
Rushing to school,
not late but not early
walking purposefully
to make it to the bus on time
Seeing the flowers
lit when they should not be
reflected light
shining down on them
Wanting to stop
to savor the moment
the dawn reflected
shining down on them
But in my rushing
not late but not early
the moment was gone
when I came back by
The light moved,
the dawn awakening
the flowers in shadows now
until later in the day

Fleeting Light
The flowers of the morning
rose hyacinth, tulips, daffodils,
narcissus, in the garden
sudden illumined
washed, from a distance
alive in holy light
Fleeting light
reflected for a moment
the sunlight hitting
the windows across the street
refracted, streaming
landing on this piece of earth

Around the Corner
Barely a straight line
the light seeming to bend
wrapping around the corner
falling on the tulips
lit in the morning light
Aglow with the day
starting, before blooming
dawn soon warming
as night turns to day

Pearls of Dew
Slowing my gait
walking more slower
shimmering light
reflected to my eye
The blades of the lilies,
the leaves of the iris
pearls of dew, glistening
in the bright morning light

Children Coming
Precious, noisier
our service different
at the feet of Jesus
children coming
into worship
Sharing their gifs
their faith
in wonder,
with us
Different, special
our lives richly blessed
coming as Christ called
let the little ones
come to me
Following his lesson
his words to the disciples
offering a safe place
letting them enter in
participating as children
believing in God

Responding to His Voice – V2
Two of them rising
believers, from the dead
responding to his voice
each to a different shepherd
yet the continuity, the continuum
evident, in the master’s name
all of us rising, our own death
forgiven, dying with him
rising with him again
in the name of our master
responding to his voice
come, rise, follow me

Giving, to be a Blessing
The gifts of his grace
dying for us
taking on our sin
that we may live
Giving, to be a blessing
revealing his message
telling of the love of God
going to the ends of the earth
Our response, not demanded,
but willingly given
going as witnesses
to spread his love

Points on a Sphere - edited
Not rigid poles,
marking the ends, of a line
static and unchanging
a yes or a no situation
in clear black and white
Not even arcs of a circle,
segments, wedges,
me in the center,
segmenting time
places where spokes alight
Points on a sphere
upon the dome
ever turning, whirling,
moving like a ball
rolling across an uneven floor
Such are the choices
my calling, my purpose
my gifts and my talents
my identifies, roles moving
not an either - or
but yes to them all
edited April 19, 2010

on the multi-faceted roles,
personae that I have,
as poet, attorney, Christian,
husband, son, father, neighbor,
friend, etc.

From a Drip a Torrent
From a drip, a torrent
the consequences unseen
in the choices we make
the little changes in time
using the resources
choosing selfishness
the earth our oyster
consuming when
we should protect
the world, cherish the creation
the order from the chaos
all set in motion
a grand design
by the loving hands of God
the consequences unseen
in the choices we make
the little changes in time
using the resources
choosing selfishness
the earth our oyster
consuming when
we should protect
the world, cherish the creation
the order from the chaos
all set in motion
a grand design
by the loving hands of God

Rules Matter
The consequences on changes
choices we make every day
our wills guiding, often without thought
of the ripples, the pulls on the fabric
the web of life, the ordered universe
the rules, precise, unchanging
the laws of nature, of God
immutable, eternal
complicated yet simple
with affects beyond our comprehension
when little changes are propagated
sent into the maelstrom
the results down the road
in a future unknown
