You must be mistaken

Maybe it was gas
some spicy burrito
some casserole left out too long
something that you ate
It must have given you bad dreams
you must have listened to demons
You must be mistaken
God did not call you

That could not have been God

They didn’t hear a voice
that wasn’t God calling
we know it for fact
because we called them sin
That could not have been God
you must have been mistaken
you are not worthy
stay out of that pulpit

Denying their Call – v2

The verdict, the judgment
condemning our sisters, our brothers
we the saints, they the strangers
the sheep and the goats

Stating that their call is a lie
that they didn’t hear God

A sin, a lie, the fact of their love
who they are, sin
denying their call
their purpose in life

not Your kind – v2

Hey, get down, you there
what are you doing in the pulpit
How dare you desecrate the temple
why do you heal on the Sabbath
Who let you in, where did you get that collar
why are you crying out for justice
We hear you even eat with sinners
Don’t you know, haven’t you heard
your kind doesn’t belong there
we had a committee, we voted
we reached agreement
we’re the ones to interpret scripture
you are not worthy
Who said you could preach here
Do you think you were called by God

Chains upon them

Slaves once again
barred from their calling
forced to deny
who they are in life
The choice for ministry
the indictment of the committee
unworthy to wear the robe
to offer God’s blessing

Christ comes to us

Christ comes to us
on the road, the journey
we may not recognize him
but we need to be open
Christ comes to us
in the journey, the walk
in ways subtle,
in profound moments of life

because they welcomed the stranger

We experience Jesus

When we serve others
Christ comes to us
We experience Jesus
in the sharing, the healing
the caring for our neighbor
we too receive a blessing
in the community, communion
the sharing of this life
with our brothers, our sisters
in this journey of faith

Christ comes to us through the hands of strangers

Christ comes to us now
through the hands of strangers
lifting us up
caring for us in this walk
our life here on earth
with us now on the journey
sharing the load with us
Christ still comes to us, a blessing
in these gifts of his love

Christ comes to us through the acts of others

It is through their kindness
through their love, their caring
in their offering of grace
a glimpse of the divine
Christ still comes to us
in ways subtle, sublime
Christ comes to us through others
through their acts and their lives

Christ comes to us in unexpected ways

Cleopas and the other
maybe one of us
not expecting Jesus
the stranger next to us
Christ comes to us
in unexpected ways
as he did for them
walking beside these disciples
on Resurrection Day

Christ comes to us as a Stranger

For most of us not in glory
in radiance, descended from heaven
the lamb stepping from his throne
to come down to meet us

Christ comes to us as a Stranger
perhaps a sister or brother
one who can draw us need to him
to set the Spirit within us singing

Christ meets us at the Table

Our eyes open
we see our Savior here
Christ meets us at the Table
calling us to draw near

Christ meets us at the table
a thin place in our walk
touching the other side
his grace poured on us

In his breaking and blessing

The stranger now the host
lifting up the bread
giving thanks to God
breaking, giving to us
The priest making the sacrifice
sharing the blessing with us
in his breaking and blessing
sharing his love
his body broken for us

Christ meets us at the rail

in that thin place, divine
Christ meet us at the rail
in his body, his bloody
his sacrifice for us
giving his body up
drinking of another cup
submitting to the will of God

Touching the other side

The thin place
the portal in that space
at communion, at the rail
not transubstantiation
not becoming his body, his blood
but as close as we can come
eating the body of the risen Christ

as we hear Christ speaking to us
when we realize it is Christ
the one who came up beside us
the one sharing a meal with us

our hearts burning within us
when Christ speaks to us
feeling his holy presence
his Spirit inside of us

speaking directly to us
as blood to each cell
warming us from within
the eternal message of love

Grieving in my spirit

Walking humbly with Christ
for a time the stranger
Christ meeting me on the road
the journey I must travel

Before the joy of awakening
new eyes that I might see
the Savior right here with me
walking beside of me

The idea of dissension among us
of discerning so differently
grieving my spirit within me
of seeing our sisters, our brothers

As others, as adversaries
praying to the Holy Spirit
to walk together in harmony,
“oh Give us Eyes to See”

Christ promises peace

The breath of the risen Savior
blown upon us
preparing us for the Spirit
who would descend upon us
Christ standing in our midst
offering us peace
steeling us for the journey
not wealth, health power
Christ promises us peace
