Ribbons of Children – v4

Amid the controlled chaos on the playground
gathering children before school
a living “Where’s Waldo” poster,
the schoolyard, the playground this morning
ribbons of children, running, skipping,
dancing over the blacktop, together, as one…

Being children, free, out in the open air
under a summer sky of blue, still summer,
at the very start of the school year,
snaking their way, through the hopscotch,
the jump rope, the tag and the banter,
coursing, like ants to the nest,
following a scent line in the dust…

No hands were held,
but they moved together,
as if connected, dancing, singing,
a ribbon of children, moving,
snaking a path through the others,
giggling, shouting, laughing all the way…

A ribbon of children – v2

Watching, silently,
on the edge of the playground,
a father dropping off children,
releasing them to the school…

Amid the controlled chaos
a living “Where’s Waldo” poster,
the schoolyard, playground this morning,
watching them forming, a living thread…

A ribbon of children,
running, skipping,
dancing across the blacktop,
as if stitched together, a line…

Being children, free,
out in the open air
snaking their way,
through the hopscotch court…

The jump rope,
the tag and the banter,
coursing, like ants to the nest,
following a scent line in the dust…

No hands were held,
but they moved together,
as if connected, giggling,
a ribbon of children, moving,

Not so little anymore, our baby girl
the others there with her
all of them grown up
new grades, a new school
she now in the fifth grade
off on the bus, the first day,
where has the summer gone,
our baby’s grown before our eyes
a start to the new year

Screened behind the Forsythia – v2

A cluster of daffodils,
variegated in color
hiding, behind the yellow
screened behind the forsythia

Seeking out their stature
their beauty partially obscured
as a demur flower, hidden
in the shadow of the leaves

Lilac Air – reprise – v6

A cloud of intoxication
flooding my senses
slowing our steps
(or mine at least)
savoring the moment
gathering in the nectar
the aerosol of fragrance
breathing springtime in
my lung full of the fragrance

Whites and purples
different shades of the bouquets
as if colors themselves emitted aromas
painting the sky with their shades
richly, urgently, calling me
wooing me, intoxicating,
to linger in the dew of fragrance
to drink of these spirits
perfumes falling down on me
raining as I walk

Lilac Air

Sweet, intoxicating, alluring
spreading out onto the playground
the bush changing the air
soft, subtle, a presence
lilac air at the side of the school
calling, enticing the passersby
to linger, to drink
aerosol nectar
sweet, lively spring perfume
a perfect fragrance,
rich with memory
under a cloudy blue sky
warm this Wednesday afternoon
Living bouquet,
a balance of purple, of green
set off against, before
red brick of the school

A cloud of intoxication
slowing our steps,

Gathering in the nectar

matching somehow the colors;
Richly, urgently, calling me

raining, falling down on me

Blond Hair Shimmering – v2

Her blond hair shimmering
in low morning sunlight
accented by chartreuse and goldenrod
the sun hiding, not visible
behind the house across the street
Only it’s light, shining
lighting up the willow tree
the branches hanging, filaments, not dreadlocks
light blond hair just washed and combed
each strand illumined, as if from within
bright, glowing, calling my attention
touches of green bleeding through
where the shoots are blooming
bursting, hastening spring time
just days away now

In the first bloom
the promise of full blossom
the color waiting

The teasing yellow
emerged from the green

The winter over

the colors alive
soon to be ablaze

She ran to see her friend
coming back together
the green clogs and the gray sneakers
walking together
Not running, not skipping
not walking in a march
but walking with the same gait
back to the rest of us

The Crunch of the Grass

The brittle lawn
the early leaves
brown where green should be
under my feet

The crunch of the grass
far to audible
loudly breaking
as I walked to school

The air oppressive
spooned into my lungs
the sweat pouring
on the way home

Blue, not Purple

The lilacs illumined
in the morning sun
hard to describe the color
so soft, finely spun

Blue, not purple
like faded blue jeans
softer than the morning sky
of a pastel azure blue

Fragrant so soft
like power on the air
a treasure of the morn
wish we all could be there

The Fruits of Last Autumn

Hanging on the tree, empty
the fruits of last autumn
the cones hanging
husks upon the branches
under the limbs of green

Reminders of the seeds
that recently were disbursed
falling like rain drops
spreading on the wind
to find new homes again
