Our dinner was delayed - v2

Our dinner was delayed - v2

She was nonplussed

I was enraged,

I wanted justice;

We were being ignored

our dinner was delayed

Our ticket still on the carousel

above the grill, the station,

our order untouched

as others were being served

sitting in the italian restaurant.

She was black, I was white,

grabbing a bite to eat

waiting to see our pastor

going through couple’s counseling

before we could marry in church.

She was nonplussed

I was incensed, wanting to rail

at the injustice, that we were ignored

that others were being served

who came in behind us.

Our dinner was delayed

but this was nothing, minor,

common place, normal;

This was nothing she hadn’t seen

so many times before.

mercy must define us – v2

there can be no other way
for others are watching;
mercy must define us
in our thoughts, our actions

we must walk humbly
we must do justice;
mercy must define us
in our words, our deeds

God has called us
Jesus has shown us;
the Spirit guides us
from day to day

we must be certain
in our words, our actions;
mercy must define us
our every breath

the divine absence – v2

whether real or imagined
baggage we carry
an ache deep in my body
not sensing God

the divine absence
not feeling God’s presence
a malaise, a sickness
an ache in my soul

needing him with me
for me to feel whole
yearning to sense Him
God’s Spirit within
