Like the Stones from the Wadi

The videotaped footage
the struggle in Cairo
factions lining up
in Tahrir Square
Like the stones from the wadi
gathered by David
thrown against the giant
to save the whole nation
Will history see
the same struggle
the small shepherd boy
against the amassed armies
the fear of repression
the subjugation of a people
in the tumult of today
will we hear the same echoes
What will the lessons be
of the stones being hurled
will the same be said
will we have heard
what will become
of the cries of the peoples
who will they sing of
in the retelling someday
of what happened on the plain of battle
when the small protestors
stood against the giant

The Will of God

That the will of God
would be seen
in the transformation
the hopes of the people
that the rulers, the leaders
would turn to the almighty
that the hearts of the faithful
would have reason to sing

All of the work
the hearts open
crying for justice
where there had been none
wishing for a change
in the life of each nation
guided by love, peace
not the corruption of power

Not to be decided
the form of transition
by outside forces
in some star chamber
organic change
humbly, in discernment
the wish of almighty
Allah, God

Tahrir Revolution ثورة التحرير

Holy Protest

May the aspirations
the hopes of the peoples
may we be witnessing
holy protest

May the people remain united
non-violent witnesses
may the tyrants crumble
into the dust of time

May the shackles be lifted
the chains of oppression
may they all breath free
in the light of your love

Oh Lord, my Savior
watch over your people
yearning to breathe free
this very day

May this be a Beginning

For all of these peoples
those under oppression
a prayer that we are witnessing
that this may be a beginning
of freedom for all peoples
that the chains of the dictators
the rulers without conscience
that the days of the masters
may be at an end

Hope that this will be peaceful
the transformations unending
that love would rain down
like a cleansing storm
that the chains would be broken
by love, non-violence
that the world would speak as one
out of the wellsprings of love

Shaking off Their Shackles

Standing in the square
fighting against repression
no longer silent
the rising of the nation

Shaking off their shackles
even if in danger
standing against the giant
the ruler of the nation

Ready to die
to not hide, complacent
in the streets, in the square
a prayer for rejuvenation

Leading out
the whole world watching
the tyrants cannot still
the beating of their hearts

The fire growing
even in the mist of the rains
the whole world waiting
for the change that is to come

A prayer for peace
a healing for this people
change too slow for some
but it is on the way

Rain in the Square

The news in Cairo
rain in the square
may it soften the hearts
of the oppressors
over there

Wash them clean
heal the brokenness
lift up their spirits
those fighting
dying for their freedom

May the Church be a Voice

Rise up believers
shout with them
may the church be a voice
for justice for the people

Tell the nations
this must end
violence, oppression
may not stand

Open your eyes,
your voices
you people
stand with them resolute
convicted by our silence

Unique only to me

In discerning my call
what God would have me do
needing to find the gifts
unique only to me

Those things I have been given
to lift up my neighbors
to bring them closer to God
to share in his goodness

His love for all of us
to the ends of the earth
yet so many times I stumble
though I hear your voice

Fearful, not fully trusting
in you my God
how will I make it
how will I survive
Needing to be more faithful
that you will continue to provide

Trusting God

Nothing more than this
to stand before the giants
trusting Go to be there
to stand with us in battle

Only needing our gifts
the gifts from almighty God
using them for His work
humbly before the Lord

Serving our neighbors
reaching out the them
using the gifts we have been given

His Strong Trust in God

Able to slay the giant
to stand in the field of battle
his strong trust in God
not in the king’s armor

We all must be like David
shedding our fetters
real to our own true selves
using our gifts from God

All of us can stand
if we trust in him
sharing love with our neighbors
the love of our savior
to the ends of the earth

An Ache for a People

Watching the violence, helpless
an ache for a whole people
convulsing in revolution
living in the maelstrom

Defiant and courageous
torn from their past
seeking a world of promise
in the thing we hope will last

Watching the violence, helpless
a half a world away
praying for peace in that kingdom
let it come today

Gifts to be used for the kingdom – v2

Not the stones, the sling
gifts to be used for the kingdom
to use our specific blessings
gifts belonging to us
to us and us alone

Not someone else’s
ours to carry into battle
sure of God’s provision
gifts he gives us
all we will ever need

He threw off the armor of man

David standing naked
humble before the giant
He threw off the armor of man
and trusted in God instead

Knowing he would be safe
as when fighting the bear, the lion
going into battle
wearing the armor of God

With his sling in his hand – v2

David’s witness
more than the stones
with his sling in his hands
entering battle with the giant

Casting off the armor
trusting in God’s providing
authentic to his calling
sure of God’s protection

His gifts enough
standing before the giant
letting the stone fly
saving his whole nation

Five Smooth Stones

Reaching down
picking up his tools
five smooth stones
to stand before the giant

Trusting in God
in the strength he had given
gifts enough for him
to meet him in battle

Stones before Me

Before the screen
the space for the papers
where I write
writing for his glory

Stones before me
to remind me
of the gifts from God
given especially to me

Smooth Stones

Something of the weight
the feeling in my palm
smooth stones from the wadi
to bring the giant down

Five stones placed on the desk
before the computer screen
reminding me of God’s provision
all that I ever need

With a Sling and a Stone

With the gifts he was given
not with borrowed armor
five stones from wadi
the assurance of God
knowing he was with him
going into battle

Ready to face the giant
armed with his gifts
the skills he was given
wearing the armor of God
there on the open plain
bringing the giant down

Only in my vision

Walking around yesterday
needing to go out
in the warmth of the day
not storms about

Wanting to see the sun
wrapped in its embrace
needing to see the world
the gift of this place

God gifting me
walking to the school
picking up the girls from work
walking along the way

Only in my vision captured
nothing film could hold
watching the brightness of the snow
the icicles row on row

Bright after the snowfalls – v2

The world alive
brilliant in white
the azure sky
shining back in light

So beautiful the storm
after its passing
bright after the snowfalls
while the sun is out

Teasing us to come
to spend time outside
to linger in the sunlight
the walk and look about

Warming sunshine
melting the snow
watching the glinting icicles
everywhere I go

My Armor

The words of the Spirit
speaking through me
the typing and sharing
what the good news means to me

Sharing this gift
my armor, my witness
the gifts he would give me
to share with the world

My Fortress

My God, my Savior
the fortress around my heart
the rock on which I stand
in the storms of life

Peace within the maelstrom
whatever may come my way
only when I turn within
hearing his call for my days

gifts for the kingdom
only to believe
I am safe in God’s protection

Needing to be strong in my faith
to believe I will be secure
to more boldly serve

With Me in My Struggles

Even when I am torn
pulled in multiple directions
even in discerning
which way I should turn

God is always with me
with me in my struggles
guiding me through
to the other side

Discerning My Stones

Like David, encumbered
each of us weighed down
when we put on the armor
the suit of another
ignoring the gifts
especially made
given by the creator
only to us

Each of us needing
as part of Christ’s ministry
witnesses now
to his goodness on earth
discerning my stones
the gifts of the wadi
taking up my own sling
out into the world

Wearing My Armor

Wearing my armor
not something borrowed
carrying the smooth stones
the pen and the word

Carrying my gifts
into this battle
sharing my passion
for your holy Word

Teach me more
to trust in your providing
that I may go boldly
as King David did

Out into battle
into the darkness
knowing you will give me
all that I need

Only in Hindsight

Only in hindsight
in that more perfect vision
seeing that God was with me
on this walk of life

That He is beside me
there in my struggles
that it was only Him
that helped me make it through

There in the mists
the history of my memory
only in reflection
did I see the hand of God

No fault but my own
the weakness of understanding
but God was there with me
all of the time

Even when I didn’t know it

God was protecting me
shielding me from the arrows
the hope that I felt
was the loving grace of God

Even in trials
when I felt more inner peace
that was the love of God with me
even when I didn’t know it

Guiding me, leading me
through the dark shadows
into the brightness
of his loving presence

Out of the shadows
carrying my witness
God right beside me
all of my days

Transforming Their Hate

Using their words
turned right around
transforming their hate
into love

Offering hope
in this connection
living out their faith
in holy conversation

Wishing to be
what God would call us to be
being Christ
in the face of evil

Offering love
when they would spew hate
none of us to judge
for we know our fate

Judge not we are told
because of the mirror
forgiving others
that God would show mercy

God’s grace alone
the gift of the cross
Christ’s sacrifice for us
for all of mankind

Open Arms of Love

Our choice to make
how we treat our brother
our sisters in this walk
the walk of our life

Open arms of love
or closed fits of anger
seeking to lift them up
or climb over the stranger

We should be acting
as if we are God’s servants
humbly serving
offering hope to our neighbors

Telling them of God’s love
sharing Christ’s grace for us
witnesses to His redeeming
his sacrifice on the cross

Love Verses

Each of us able
to choose love not hate
offering love verses to our neighbors
spoken from our hearts

Nothing needing to be fancy
sometimes the words written
sometimes written only
on the fabric of our hearts

Other times the prayers
the offering of our mouths
written in the smiles we offer
to our brothers, our sisters
sharing the wellsprings of love

Made of Flesh and Blood - 2

A man, each one of us
made of flesh and blood
able to feel pain, joy
as we walk upon the earth

Christ came from his throne
descending from heaven above
walking as one of us
offering his love

Giving his all for each one of us
dying for you and for me
taking on the stain of our sin
pouring out the blood of his life
his flesh rent for us

Entering Time

Christ, God, Emmanuel
Entering our world
the infinite, unending
entering time,
bound by, defined
human life
a journey between
for the divine
Like him, we too
living on this earth
walking the way of the Christ
born again, by the spirit
washed in his blood
In the image of God
walking in the world
between creation and heaven
ascending once more

the world around us whiter

A Burst of Juncos

Like some kind of confetti
shot from a cannon
the sky suddenly darker
against the sea of white
A burst of juncos
erupting from the tree
startled from their snacking
the cats bereft that their show
was turned to another channel

A Challenge for the Plowman

A challenge for the plowman
thrown down in as in a duel
the road now five feet wider

To see if he will take the bait
make my work tomorrow easier
if he will keep the parking spaces open
there in front of the church

More than they had done
same as last year
a taste of their taking the bait
in that I only cleared a veneer

The snow blower put away
until the dawn breaks
a foot or more is predicted
we will have to parry,
joust another day

The Bite of the Shovel

The soft snow giving
the bite of the shovel
catching the sand thrown
covering the sidewalk
the blacktop frozen
glaze of black obsidian
the metal blade on the plastic
biting into the ice

Quiet on the street
few cars passing by
noticing the plowman
saw the edge of the street
wider than normal
from my earlier efforts
less of their work to do
shoveling the street

The Dance of the Fire

The wood already charred
its color on my fingers
building a teepee
over the discarded papers
kindled with the lighter
the flames licking the kindling
the dance of the fire
consuming all of the tissue
the paper and the trees

In the Cocoon of the Storm

Lives waiting
huddled in our houses
school cut short
cancellations

Watching the weather forecast
another log on the fire
snow accumulating
in the cocoon of the storm

In the Flesh of Earth

Wrapped in clay
emptied of his holiness
God descending to earth
walking as a man

Humble, of the dust
temporal, as you and me
here to save the world
for our judgment, destiny

In the flesh of easrth
yet humble, the lamb
choosing the way of the cross
submissive to God’s plan

Dying, laid in the grave
wrapped in the shroud of death
rising to victory
seated in heaven instead

Waiting there for us
preparing mansions in the sky
his grace a way to life
sharing his light with all

In the flesh of man
we walk this earth
lights to our neighbors
journeying through the world
until we go to heaven

Entering Time

Christ, God, Emmanuel
Entering our world
the infinite, unending
entering time,
bound by, defined
human life
a journey between
for the divine
Like him, we too
living on this earth
walking the way of the Christ
born again, by the spirit
washed in his blood
In the image of God
walking in the world
between creation and heaven
ascending once more

Pause in Our Reading

A hush in the temple
the sanctuary silent
a pause in our reading
in the story of our healing

Gentiles added
to the children of Abraham
The first transformation
by the power of the Spirit
all of us now
may enter the flock

Peter seeing
sharing with others
the vision of oneness
in his holy dream

All of us able
to be restored by Jesus
all of us called
by God’s holy Word

The Words of His Sermon

The dream of Peter
the saving of Cornelius
God’s great salvation
for all the people on earth

Telling the story
the Spirit moving
the words of his sermon
the ancient holy text

The words enough
the important of this moment
God’s healing
in the power of dreams

All of us worthy
of the grace he offers
saved by the name
of Jesus the Christ

Waiting to Hear

In response to his vision
sending for Peter
to be instructed by him
who sat at the Master’s feet
Waiting to hear

blessed by salvation
through the power of Jesus
redeeming the Gentiles
all who would believe

Lord of All - 2

A title of Christ
power in its meaning
the Lord of all
not just of one people

Christ the King
of all who would call him
baptized in his name
redeemed by his blood

All of us unworthy
saved by His grace
his coming from heaven
choosing to take our place

The gift of the Spirit
guiding us homeward
through the darkness of this world
a light for our steps
to our heavenly reward

Stand Resolute

On the rock of Christ
wearing the armor of God
Stand resolute
firm against the storm
the powers of hell
lapping with fire
longing for our souls
Shine your light
piercing the dark
walk in His ways
in the ways of the cross

The message of Peter’s vision

All who believe in him

To all who came to him

Christ was open
outside of structure
nothing rigid about our Savior
humble to a fault

To all who came to him
he offered his love
extending his hand to us
healing our brokenness

All of us like those
who lived in his time
needing the saving of his grace
the love of his touch

We are the same as them
needing our brother
the shepherd still calling to us
to come and be his people

Extended His Hand in Love

Christ’s example, our model
how we are to love
to offer our hand in friendship
to lift our neighbor up

Christ was not choosy
excluding the low, the rejected
he extended his hand in love
to all of the people

We should do not less
excluding any neighbor
our doors should be open
to help our brothers
all our sisters in need

Joy in Our Trials

Hard to embrace
joy in our trials
feeling their weight
unable to truly
turn them over to You
We pray for Your presence
that we could let go

Leave our fears, our struggles
on Your altar today
free to feel Your blessing
in learning Your lessen
Your purpose in our trials
preparing us for service
sharing Your love

Jesus lived as the dream of God

A vision of a just world
caring for our neighbor
seeking the guidance of God
to inform every action

Christ is the example
asking God for discernment
What Would God Do
in every situation

He is the embodiment
of humble submission
Jesus lived as the dream of God
fulfilling the vision

We must model
putting on the Christ
continuing as he was led
following the will of God

Ordinary Working Men

When we doubt our call
our importance to God’s purpose
remember the first disciples
how they are so much like us

Ordinary working men
not the leaders in the temple
even Jesus, the carpenter,
he is the good shepherd

We can do great things
living as worship
submitting to the master’s plan
fulfilling his holy purpose
