repost - The Banner of Freedom – v4

The colors of our country
How proudly they wave;
So much sacrifice
Freedom’s price to this day.

Our nation’s ideals
For this it stands tall;
That we would remember
The cost of Freedom’s call.

repost - Raising the Colors – v5

Running to one court, a quick filing,
before racing back to the office,
for a swallow of coffee, gathering papers
and another hearing at another court
that same day.

But between these, the motion of the day,
Stopping, pausing, watching;
Standing still, reverent,
for the raising of the colors
before the first courthouse.

A moment of reflection, pausing,
caught in the bright morning sun;
Time standing still;
Grateful for where I stand,
for the courage they showed.

a flag burning

how it must have been
for Moses with a bush burning
a fire not consuming
but shining greatly

a flag burning this morning
on its pole in the cold of winter
the sun which God created
setting the flag ablaze

how it must have been
for those in the harbor
watching for the dawn
to see if our flag was still flying

a visual reminder, a promise,
in the trials we face as a nation
that the flag of freedom burns
no matter the attacks against her

Every Flag – v3

Every flag was flying
all around our state
in the driving we did
on this special day

Every flag flying,
none of the poles empty,
yes every flag was flying
at only half staff

None of us had to ask
why they flew this way;
none of us will ever forget
what happened on this day.
