They live under constant bombardment
daily attacks without ceasing
endless terror, genocide,
so many innocent civilians
murdered in their beds…
 
They face relentless bombings in their cities
Shahed drones, bombs, and missiles
in the night, the daylight, coming,
no rest for the weary, the people,
Russia’s constant attacks…
 
They are still waiting for partners
for the Willing to act,
to Stand With Ukraine
in their valiant fight…
 
They alone have carried
the banner of freedom
the rules-based order
this moment, this test…
 
We must share the responsibility
because Russia will not stop
they must be defeated in Ukraine
for peace to come…

I hope for peace, a just peace,
a prayer abiding within me
for the world, our spirits,
for this hurting nation,
suffering for so long
Я надіюся на мир
for the people of Ukraine,
May a just peace come quickly
A just peace at last...
 
Lord, we come before You...
Hear our prayer, oh Father,
for Ukraine, for her people,
carrying our burden
holding high their banner
standing against Moskal’s horde...
in a fight they never wanted,
fighting because they must
for their nation to survive,
to continue to exist...
 
Protect them, Lord, we pray...
We pray that real partners rise,
honest about the pain they endure,
standing, because we are timid,
because we are complacent
because we are complicit in blood...
silent in their torment, silent
when we must speak, when we must act,
against Russia, against genocide,
the evil of this unholy war...
 
Lord, hear our prayers...
Lord, bring a just peace
to the people of Ukraine...
May they heal from war...
from the great pain they carry
the evil they have endured...
May Your light pierce the darkness...
May evil be defeated...
May Ukraine be restored...
May they live in peace once more...

A bed of pine, of leaves,
corrugated metal for a roof
and snow fencing walls...
a tin of fresh-pine-needle tea
brewing in the open fire...
 
A coffee-stain of rust 
white and mint-green lichen
the metal thin
when it shouldn't be
shape to my touch...
 
My place of refuge
out in the woods
just up the hill
off the path, in the deep...
just up from home.
 
I remember the pine needles 
untrammeled, deep,
like light snow in a filed
texture like corn husks 
that had been allowed to dry...
 
A place for reflection 
sanctuary in the city
close but away
from the day-to-day
from school, from my home...
 
Near the single-bed of lady slippers
that I had discovered,
up the path and to the right...
I could still walk it now
Fifty years later... 
though I haven't yet...

the same as the dust of Aleppo
The choice of the world
was to remain silent...
 
The same enemy stalks the world,
The same evil is on the march,
The same as the Holodomor, the gulags...
The age of tyrants must end;
Freedom must take its place...
 
Far Too Many Cities in Ukraine
have been reduced to ash and rubble
When our indifference is inaction
when we could act...
 
Our complacency is complicity...
Ours is an immoral choice -
There is no neutrality in genocide -
We fail to stand with them
in the breach, in the gap...
 
They needed more than our words,
our promises when we would not keep them...
They needed us to stand with them
to fight for their victory...
 
History will be written
in the dust, in their black soil,
when our indifference was inaction
when we could have stood with them
the brave people of Ukraine...

their demands are escalating...
Hear the cries of your Future
to the leaders of Ukraine...
 
Like Maidan they saw in their youth,
Like their protests for NABU last year...
the cardboard signs they hold at 9:00 am...
Replaced with protest signs at 9:01 am...
 
Their protests are louder, strident,
while the Rada is empty
Their demands are escalating -
Their future is in the breach...
 
A 21st-century war...
demands a 21st-century leader...
Innovation will save them
for an enduring peace...
 
Their protest are for justice,
for reforms to the system...
The Soviet way of war
will not defeat the Russians...
 
Attrition will not prevail...
Asymmetric war is essential...
The battlefield is on the screens
of thousands of drone operators...
