A bed of pine, of leaves,
corrugated metal for a roof
and snow fencing walls...
a tin of fresh-pine-needle tea
brewing in the open fire...
 
A coffee-stain of rust 
white and mint-green lichen
the metal thin
when it shouldn't be
shape to my touch...
 
My place of refuge
out in the woods
just up the hill
off the path, in the deep...
just up from home.
 
I remember the pine needles 
untrammeled, deep,
like light snow in a filed
texture like corn husks 
that had been allowed to dry...
 
A place for reflection 
sanctuary in the city
close but away
from the day-to-day
from school, from my home...
 
Near the single-bed of lady slippers
that I had discovered,
up the path and to the right...
I could still walk it now
Fifty years later... 
though I haven't yet...

A bed of pines, of leaves,

My place of refuge
out in the woods
just up the hill
off the path, in the deep...
just up from home.
 
A place for reflection
sanctuary in the city
close but away
from the day-to-day
from school, from my home...
 
Near the single-bed of lady slippers
that I had discovered,
up the path and to the right...
I could still walk it now
Fifty years later...

Across the plane of the #petals – v4 #flowers #God #creation

I stopped to capture beauty, an image…
Drawn into memory, history, legacy,
motion froze in time, still air
The flower not moving…
Serenity in the stillness, momentarily,
Sunlight bathed upon the blossom,
across the plane of the petals,
all in capturing the focus, clarity,
breathing, drinking it all in…

Perfection in every detail,
subtle hints of shadow,
depth in millimeters, precision,
sunlight revealing a moving wave,
all drawn into focus, depth of field…
flatness of the blossom
diving in ever more closely
holding my breath, steady,
for the perfect shot…

When we stop, when we look more closely,
We see the world differently, wonder,
in precision, close-up, closer,
the intricate precision, the Creator’s plan…
Lowering my body, my eyes, my lens,
across the plane of the petals,
stopping even for a moment…
Beauty alive in the still air
just off the front porch…

Velvet, satin, a soft living fabric,
Speaking the words of texture
without touching, disturbing the moment,
Eternity cut by the Creator, such precision,
formed within the unfolding kernel,
across the plan of the petals…
The center rising, a prima ballerina,
Ache of stopped motion, frozen,
poised like a spinning top…
 
Across the plane of the petals,
illumined in the warm sunlight,
seeing the beauty God created…
Slowing my steps toward the door,
pausing from my motion…
A moment too important to lose…
Seeing the world stopped, frozen,
taking time to notice, to marvel at
the work of our Potter’s hand…

Across the plane of the petals – v3

Stopping to capture beauty…

drawn into memory, history, legacy,

motion froze in time, still air…

serenity in the stillness, momentarily,

across the plane of the petals,

all in the focus, clarity,

breathing, drinking it all in...

Perfection in the details,

subtle hints of shadow

sunlight hitting a moving wave,

all drawn into focus, depth of field…

flatness of the blossom

diving in ever more closely

for the perfect shot…

Seeing the world differently

in precision, close-up, closer,

lowering my body, my eyes, my lens,

across the plane of the petals,

stopping even for a moment…

beauty alive in the still air

just off the front porch…

Skin of crinkled cellophane – v3

Skin of crinkled cellophane,
Blistered peel of its flesh,
Color like the corona, brilliant,
Outside the arc, the edge,
The plane across, eternity,
That we traverse, striving,
Living, alive by the street...
 
Life in the fabric, nature,
Ancient yet enduring,
Flesh puckered, ablaze,
Living evermore, frozen,
Coming into view, emergent,
A metaphor of the universe,
Framed against the grass...

Skin of crinkled cellophane
blistered peel of flesh
Color like the corona,

The plane across
which we traverse,
Alive by the street...
 
Life in the fabric,
Ancient yet enduring,
Flesh puckered, ablaze,
Alight, alive evermore,
A change in our point of view,
A metaphor of the universe,
Framed against the grass...

Living flesh shimmering – v2 #plumeria #color

Living flesh shimmering, quickening,
alive under the many dewdrops, captured,
a gem of color, a deep red, hard to describe,
though I long to give the pigment voice
to shout, to sing of its existence…
 
Darker than candy-apple red, crimson,
more alive than blood, almost metallic,
Ruby in its name, in creation, but deeper,
there is more than that to its shade, its hue,
radiant-wet color drawing me in…
 
Seeing a dark sorbet, not raspberry,
blueberry or even blackberry, darker,
Häagen-Dazs Boysenberry Sorbet, that was it,
tasted once in Chicago, a bit of perfection,
while crocuses and daffodils were buried,
in new-fallen snow, forty years ago….

Living flesh shimmering

Living flesh shimmering, quickening,
alive under the dewdrops, captured,
a gem of color, hard to describe,
though I long to give the pigment voice
to sing of its existence…
 
Darker than candy-apple red, crimson,
more alive than blood, almost metallic,
Ruby in its name, in creation, but deeper,
there is more than that to its shade,
wet color drawing me in…
 
Seeing a dark sorbet, not raspberry,
blueberry or even blackberry, darker,
Boysenberry only, tasted once in Chicago,
a bit of perfection, while crocuses and daffodils
were buried, in new-fallen snow, forty years ago….

Kissed by the breath of morning – v4 #plumeria

A flower now a living confection,
a bit of frosting, some gelato,
teasing our senses, the eye, opening…
Kissed by the breath of morning, magic,
Awakening, releasing, freeing beauty,
turned on the wheel, bursting, vibrant,
powder yellow, fragrant, spinning like a top…
 
Butter crème frosting melting,
A golden creme fraiche confection,
mixing, blended, fused with
dew of the morning, sweet sugars…
Tart lemon sorbet blossoms, opening,
growing in their garden, regal,
a taste for the senses, the eye…



wrong color, more fully opened, but plumeria
