Ribbons of Children – v4

Amid the controlled chaos on the playground
gathering children before school
a living “Where’s Waldo” poster,
the schoolyard, the playground this morning
ribbons of children, running, skipping,
dancing over the blacktop, together, as one…

Being children, free, out in the open air
under a summer sky of blue, still summer,
at the very start of the school year,
snaking their way, through the hopscotch,
the jump rope, the tag and the banter,
coursing, like ants to the nest,
following a scent line in the dust…

No hands were held,
but they moved together,
as if connected, dancing, singing,
a ribbon of children, moving,
snaking a path through the others,
giggling, shouting, laughing all the way…

A ribbon of children – v2

Watching, silently,
on the edge of the playground,
a father dropping off children,
releasing them to the school…

Amid the controlled chaos
a living “Where’s Waldo” poster,
the schoolyard, playground this morning,
watching them forming, a living thread…

A ribbon of children,
running, skipping,
dancing across the blacktop,
as if stitched together, a line…

Being children, free,
out in the open air
snaking their way,
through the hopscotch court…

The jump rope,
the tag and the banter,
coursing, like ants to the nest,
following a scent line in the dust…

No hands were held,
but they moved together,
as if connected, giggling,
a ribbon of children, moving,
laughing as one…

Adding Water – v2

Water they need,
to live, to grow, seeds,
planted in the garden.

Add the water, each in their turn
different water each will give
other foods to nourish,
to feed the fields.

Different gifts given
to the congregation
growing to discipleship
adding water.

Each in their turn
watering, toiling,
tending for the Gardener.

Watering Seeds – v2

Each of us seeds, seeds within us
seeds we plant, we sow
throughout the garden
each provides the water,
different gifts, callings, our purpose,
all needed to nourish the seeds

What one plants, another waters
offering love, testimony, hope,
many water, weeding, care for the garden
God provides the growth
when God wills, reaping a harvest
by hands which did not plant

Living water, a river of faith
living in our hearts, one by one

seeds, sprouting, each growing,

The Shimmer of the Rain – v3

The afternoon changing
the sound of the water
crashing, crescendo,
the shimmer of the rain
ringing in my ears

Sheets, curtains of the cloudburst
filtered into my thinking
pulling me to the sound
hearing the dance of the shower
from the sky onto the dry ground

Not the Religion – v2

not the religion, not the name we claim
Christian, follower, disciple, any other label
proof of our humanity, our belief in love
in the way we life, in what we do
how we walk on this earth
humble, good to our neighbors
reaching out to those in need
no label, no denomination
no fraction of the whole
nothing to set us apart
part of our family
the whole human race
offered grace by the Creator
in relationship,
within the body,
we all find our place

Not Exactly in Shadows – v2

The color richer, deeper somehow,
because it was muted
not exactly in shadows
our sun behind dark clouds

Hiding in plain sight
not casting its light
the tulips alive, growing in
the dimmed morning bright

Glimpses of Fire – v2

Glimpses of fire
fleetingly in the sky
early morning bursts
of color, gossamer moments
turning to smoke
right before my eyes

Stopping to wonder
to snap a picture or two
to watch the changing sky
brilliant colors of the dawn
yellow, white, luminous, alive
caught in the mirror of the clouds

Dulling to gray, blue, purples
softer pastels of darker hues
a different palette all together
in a matter of seconds
lost in sameness
a washed tableau
fading from view

Muffled This Morning – v3

The sounds caught
as if in a spider’s web
the lowered clouds
with them in their grasp

Muffled this morning
the world slow awakening
the mist of the morning
silencing the din

As if through cotton batting
the air pregnant, thinking
muffled this morning
slow to awake

Brush Strokes in the Heavens – v3

thin, fine, airy, lines only
sometimes much wider
brush strokes in the heavens
ribbons, painted, effortlessly
mascara lashes,  pulled by a brush
vertically written
as if on angels’ eyes
written on the sky

suspended in the December sky
written across the heavens
there beside the interchange
visible from many angles
precise brush strokes of the Master
spoken on the wind
written on the sky

Not Stopping When I Should Have - v2

Rushing to school,
not late but not early
Walking purposefully
to make it to the bus on time

Seeing the flowers
lit when they should not be
Reflected light
shining down on them

Wanting to stop
to savor the moment
The dawn reflected
shining down on them

But in my rushing
not late but not early
The moment was gone
when I came back to see them

The light moved,
the dawn awakening
The flowers in shadows now
until later in the day

all of them grown up

Sticky Air – v4

Not like summer
hot humidity
a coolness of spring
a mist, moving
light on the air

Yet the sounds, the motion
waking of new morning
tamped down, slowed
muted, the edges,
as if by sticky air

The web of the morning clouds
lowered to the ground
our world ensnared, wrapped
as if held in a web
in the blanket of the mist

The Muffled Morning – v4

No sounds around me
everything muffled this morning
the air gray, cotton
no edge to the clouds
gathered down, around me
pulling me in

Brightening yet awash
with muted colors
a blanket of morning
dancing, alive before me
rain wrapped round us
not letting me go

The Muffled Morning – v3

The sounds all around me
muffled this morning
the air gray, cotton
like falling into batting
no edge to the clouds
gathered down, around me
drinking the sounds
the world becoming silent

Brightening yet awash
with muted colors
paisleys, swirls
dancing, alive before me
but held by the grip
the rain wrapped round us
not letting me go
