a body of rice – v6

It was a pure moment,
an instant never to be forgotten,
capturing a four-year old’s faith
caught by my ear,
in the snack aisle,
for this moment, the Church…

A sleeve of rice cakes
seen for its essence,
in a different place,
broken by clergy,
as the Body of Christ
for the wheat intolerant…

My face broke into smile,
before her question,
caught too by her spirit,
and her belief,
in the transformation,
within Christ’s blessing…

Based on Shanequa’s question to me if this
was the body of Christ when we were at Market Basket
on April 22, 2006. She had assisted some weeks earlier at
setting up communion at the Rejuvenation service at our church.
She understood the elements were merely
bread and juice before the pastors’ blessing.

String of Pearls – v2

Foggy morning
On the Vineyard
In Aquinnah
Wet chair, hot coffee
Sip in the heat
Shake the daze

Camera and film
At the ready
Over my shoulder; let’s go
Sandals snap as I walk
In the early morning
Before the island awakes

Misty morning
Silent witness
Full of promise
For a skilled watcher
Moving stalker
Of moment and place

Wet green
Color scheme
Lush, summer
Looking for a web
Adorned with moisture
Ready to pose

A string of pearls
There before me
Hovered before a backdrop
A perfect set up
Bowed by the wait
Of the night

A long cord
Tacky to hold the drops
As dew was conjured in the dark;
My reflection in each as I approached
To steal the scene
With close-up lens

Centered and balanced
Enlarged and framed
Hovering now
On my wall
To conjure the moment
On that path
Years ago

a body of rice – v5

This was a pure moment
an instant never to be found
again, captured,
A four-year-old’s faith,
captured in my ear
in the snack aisle
(for this moment the church).

A sleeve of rice cakes
seen for its essence
in a different place
at a time made holy;
Broken by clergy
as the Body of Christ
for the wheat intolerant.

My face broke into a smile
before her question
caught too by her spirit
and her simple belief
in the transformation;
the world made more perfect
within this blessing.

A body of rice,
flesh broken for us,
to remember,
to never forget,
what Christ gave us
climbing our cross

To see the world
the Word, life,
as a child, to understand
with my heart
more than my intellect
my mind, real, authentic,
to see with these eyes.

Cottages – v2

Gingerbread cottages,
on the old revival campsites,
around the grand Tabernacle
on the Oak Bluff
over the Atlantic
on Martha’s Vineyard.

Hearing ghosts of sermons and
summer sounds of families
year after year
as wood frames replaced tents
on the narrow family plots.

Rev. Brown, retired now,
told me the history
The story of a faith community
resident there each summer
on this Island,
Martha’s Vineyard.

Feeding Judas, Washing Peter’s Feet

an act of submission
of sacrificial love
knowing all
because He was God
feeding Judas,
washing Peter’s feet
when all of them
would fail Him
betraying, denying,
running away
Christ yet the Servant
on His last day.

The Morsel of Bread – v27

What must he have felt, sharing in the meal
the invocation, the intoning of the words
these words of the teacher, the master, Rabbi
changing the ancient words of remembrance
saying something entirely new, a new covenant

The morsel of bread dipped, shared from His hands
His words to go, to do that which is planned quickly

What must he have thought, in that moment,
the doubt, the confusion, steps set in motion
unable to pull back, the wheels of time turning
His body, His blood, His sacrifice,

dripping on his hands.
