The Soul of their Poet...
his heart beats within me...
High on that mountain
high above the Dnipro
I feel the touch of his fingers
Grasping my quill, leading me
to share his hope, his fidelity...
His breath touches my face...
I feel his closeness
even as I write these lines...
 
The Soul of their Poet,
Taras Shevchenko, Taras,
the poet of his people, Ukraina...
The Kobzar, the rock, the fount,
the father of their nation
lives within me, guides me, writes,
sharing lines like sacred scripture...
Calling upon Taras within me,
his words to my lips,
his hope on my heart...

This poem was inspired by a note on February 3, 2026, from Oleksandra Moskalenko,
Willem F. Duisenberg Fellow, University of Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Studies,
on LinkedIn, “Shevchenko appears to us almost a prophet,
someone who foresaw this war and believed in our victory.”
Several of his poems speak to that to me, including “The Dream”,
“The Great Grave”, and “To Marko Vovchok”

Thirty-five years of life
of Ukraine’s independence,
shaking off chains of empire
the curse of many generations
unwilling to be subjects
to be slaves, serfs,
of their largest neighbor...
Unwilling to submit
to Moskal’s army...
 
Thirty-five years of fight
for full independence
to chart their own course
to stand as a free people
no longer slaves to tyrants
reclaiming what was taken
what was stolen from them
by the Bolsheviks, by the Tsar...
Yet always yearning to be free...
 
Thirty-five years of Moscow’s lie,
of the Soviets and the Tsars before them,
that they were one people
when Ukraine yearns to be free,
they have fought for independence,
they have been starved and deported...
Nothing of this is neighborly,
trying to erase Ukraine,
to make it a vassal state...
 
Thirty-five years of independence,
fighting for autonomy, survival,
twelve years of invasion of war,
of genocide by their neighbor,
of daily attacks by Russia,
Ukraine stands in the breach,
Ukraine is fighting their evil...
Ukraine will not submit,
Ukraine will win its freedom...

a choice to fight, to train,
to not be submissive...
to stand for Ukraine...
to wage war against the enemy
to not accept subjugation
rejecting the choice of history
when their people were enslaved...

Taras' Cry, his Lament,
in “Заповіт” (“Testament”)
"Я не знаю Бога."...

We hear his anguish
in a foreign land, his heart
longing for Ukraine...
 
His words were a cry, a confession,
a lament, a curse, a rebuke
Taras spat upon himself...
 
But it was a lie, an indictment
so undeserved...
for his love for his people
was breathed by God,
His words are like scripture,
a constant lament...
 
Taras said, "I don't know God",
but he knew God's heart...
 
God was within him, beside him,
in fetters, in chains,
while he was on the steppes...
In the sentence of the Tsar...
 
God was with Taras
in the gift of flight, flying,
from his prison, over Ukraine...

Taras' cry, his plea was answered by God...
He was brought home to Ukraine,
to his eternal reward...
 
Yes, Taras knew God
in his native heart...

starting from nothing
handcuffed by their allies...
Ukraine’s innovation is
changing the course of history
The way of modern war...
 
They are like America after Pearl Harbor,
Ukraine after the full-scale invasion -
All hands on deck...
in garages and basements
across Ukraine
A new war would rise...
 
Everyone is an inventor,
a creator of a drone army
through innovation and necessity
filling critical gaps in manpower...
An emergent new strategy,
taking advantage of Russia’s size...
 
The Age of Drones has emerged,

Slowly, but then all of a sudden

Loosing the grip of the tyrant...

Breaking the chains of empire

fetters on their hearts...

Grains falling into the hourglass

faithful steps unfolding...

that which was planned for centuries

coming to vivid life...

A dream of freedom, legacy,

reclaiming their ancient glory...

They stand resolute, united

in this their victory...

Attrition is by inches

leading to a tipping point...

Will is stronger than size 

in their current fight...

Breaking the chains of empire

making them bleed with a thousand cuts...

Freedom is inevitable

when their work is done...

Taras shed blood for his nation’s colors,
He sang the song of Ukraina...
He was so much a part of Ukraine,
Her heartbeat was ever within him,
though he was far from her,
He was forever Ukraine ...
 
He flew to her from his prison,
His thoughts were ever with her...
His words are prophetic, prescient,
Taras saw this future, this moment...
He is the Kobzar, the Prophet,
He foresaw the victory of Ukraine...
 
Taras wept for Ukraine,
in his Dream, in his Testament...
He saw, he knew her weakness,
the weakness of her leaders
who obeyed the Moskals,
ransoming her legacy, her destiny…
 
Taras knew serfdom, the yoke
of sin and enslavement by the Tsar...
But he foresaw his beloved people,
united in this great struggle...
He predicted the victory of Ukraine
over Moskal’s horde…
 
So, sing songs of the Kobzar,
Read his cry for freedom,
join with his prophecy, glory...
His words are a prayer over Ukraina,
Rising from the ashes of war...
Hope, in her victory’s song…

Our prayer repeating, recurring, urgent,
Frozen in time, unresolved, waiting,
a nation in rubble, burning, forgotten,
standing on its own, too long...
Fighting for democracy…
Don’t let evil win, be triumphant,
Don’t give Ukraine to the Madman
It will not be the end of his dreams…
 
Our silence crying out, longing,
Our prayer repeating this day,
to retake the stage, the breath,
to join them in their fight…
Evil only understands threat/ resolve,
his card of nuclear Armageddon…
The West cowed once again….
A rabid Bear on the march…
 
His dreams of conquest, an empire,
The lies of his own propaganda,
destruction of just one nation, Ukraine,
isn’t the end of his mission, his purpose,
His cry for ancient blood…
His fevered quest is much greater,...
We must stop him now, here,
before he kills, and kills again…

фронт буде всюди

If we are not awake, to their terror,
glide bombs, missiles, cluster munitions,
drones, with no fear of reprisals, attacks,
no consequences to their actions, ...
Their crimes against humanity,
their acts of cruel genocide
will only escalate...
 
We pray, hoping for change, wisdom, resolve,
for eyes to be opened, for hearts to be ready,
for allies to rise in equal measure,...
For bravery to match theirs, these people,
courage to serve Ukraine's needs, fully,
to keep the bear from escalation,
from their attacks, scorched earth...
 
The front line must be all, our stand,
with them, for victory, for peace,...
We must give them what they need,...
Or the front will be everywhere,
every home, every life, everyone,
a target, a victim, a martyr,
a testament to chaos, to hate...
 
So much carnage, destruction,
their bombs destroying life,
lives, history, culture lost, more martyrs,
while we say “Never Again”...
While the West dithers, delays,
while they debate and wait, ...
asleep in their safe beds...

Death, explosions, terror, evil,
in so many villages, towns, and cities...
like the destruction in World War II,
the same level of devastation, death,
innocent cities and villages, history, culture,
all are being turned to nothing, to dust…
 
Attrition, they say, war, by inches,
will lead us out of madness,...
a tipping point will come,
to defeat the evil tyrant
internal forces will stop him,...
He will be made to relent…
 
But what about the martyrs,
those killed in their beds,
the defenders, the medics,
their best sons and daughters,...
What about every first responder,
killed in a cruel double-tap…
 
How long can we expect them?
to defend our sovereignty alone,
to stand in the gap for us,
for freedom for all, peace,...
when we sit in comfort,
fear at arm’s reach, hidden…
 
Attrition, but a word, truly,
on the news, in a policy paper,
except for the people living,
dying, injured, shattered,
in the crosshairs of evil…
Knowing this war is all too much…
 
We must do more, better,
all of us, their partners,
to stand beside them, helping,
giving them what they need,...
so that attrition’s awful cost,
will finally bring victory…
