Walk in Christ

All of our lives
to walk in Christ
in him God revealed
his fullness, his all
all that we need

Grace alone
in the way of Christ
in love alone
God enough
all that we need

A Babel of Voices

Other voices
some distracting
a babel of voices
other than Christ
speaking of rules
of other paths to God
other than Christ

Christ alone
the fullness of God
speaking truth
what we must do
freed from sin
walking as a servant
faithful to God.

False Instructions

Too many voices
rigid and off-key
false instructions
leading in circles
confusing words
leading away from God

The true teaching
the fullness of God
in the Christ
come to the earth
in his Spirit
dwelling in us

His Blood in Us

As believers joined
united with Christ
his Spirit within us
his sinew his blood
The fullness of God
all that He Is
living and breathing
informing our steps
living that we would live
in glory with him
walking with us
that we would truly live
acting out his commands
to love one another
as only he can

Healthy in God

As part of the Body,
with Christ the head
we are nourished by the Spirit
in this we are led

Healthy in God
growing within us
guiding by our savior
walking in the way

Cleave to our Brother
our advocate in heaven
calling us to him
all of our days

Turn from other voices
calling to us
they are not for us
for us the way of the cross

The Substance of Christ

The fullness of God
the substance of Christ
more than supplanting the law
bringing God to the earth

All the rules, the strictures,
the provisions of man
humble, and dross,
in the coming of Christ

Follow Christ
live him each day
nothing else measuring up
push them out of the way!

Living in Christ

Living in Christ
under the mantle of the cross
the way of our savior
leading us from the lost

Baptized with him
we come to know the father
walking with him
we come to know love

Shut out the false voices
trying to pull us from the path
speak boldly the message
that all would know God

Ignore False Messages

Stop listening to others
live Christ, as we have been told
stay on the path
following only the Christ

Ignore false messages
they do not lead to God
in Christ alone
do we walk toward paradise

Empty Without Him

The void, nothingness
all of creation
empty without him
through Christ all came to be

All of God present
in the fullness of Christ
how to see the father
look no further than the son

We may see our creator
in the face of the man on the cross
sacrificing himself for us
that we would be redeemed from the lost

Something that Just Is

The fullness of Christ
of God with us
now and forever
nothing to discern or to find
something that just is

Nothing to figure out
nothing to achieve
only to submit to the Christ
to turn and to believe

Washed in the waters
cleansed of our stain
rising with Christ
to spread the good news
to rise with him again

Entering into His Fullness

Entering into Christ
in the baptism of believers
dying to our old selves
rising as new creations
the fullness of God
in the way he walked on earth
guiding our steps hereafter
leading to eternal birth

The Fullness of Christ

The completeness of Christ
the fullness of our master
the love of all
written in his blood
the stain he carried
redemption of our sin
nothing to be studied
something that simply is.

What Would We Do (WWWD)

What would we do
if we really lived Jesus
if we listened to his command
and truly loved our neighbors

What would we leave behind
in the race of our life
what voices would we cast off
if we cleaved only to the Christ?

Received Christ

We have received Christ
a gift beyond measure
in our baptism dying
in rising, we rise with him

The Spirit descending
like a dove or tongues of fire
Christ living within us
his Spirit guiding our feet

Live him, so we are told
the apostle to the Gentiles
sent to the ends of the earth
to do our master’s will

Going as he was sent
commissioned by the father
a small expression of his grace
his love for us unending.

Built Upon Christ

Our lives, our foundation
our path for the journey
built upon Christ
well constructed on him

Able to stand
to withstand the storms
the other voices calling
to pull us away from God

Christ inside
the Spirit indwelling
keeping us on the path
if we listen to him

Threads of Our Journey

A tapestry is being stitched
year by year
story by story,
step by step, thread by thread

Pictures of our life together
coming alive, vivid and wonderful
with threads of gold,
of silver, of royal purple,
of hope, of faith, of love

Our story unfolding
the threads joined
in the fabric, the knitted
tapestry of our life

All of Life

Not just the cycle of life
the seasons, the circulation of the earth
set in perpetual motion
all of creation, all of life
guided by your loving hand
shaped by your crafting
cared for you oh God alone

All that is needed
in every moment
provided by you oh Lord
our father and our brother
filling us with all we need
happy in your provision.

Nothing Weak or Shallow

The power of these words
nothing vague or ambiguous
if we believe
it will happen

Fall to our knees
lift our prayers to heaven
confess our sins to God
and he will hear our prayer

Hope in Christ alone
in the living God
healing our brokenness
healing our humble prayers.

The Rock of Christ

Anchored on Christ
the rock of our salvation
his life written in the book
the same throughout the ages

Secure in his promise
with us to the end
here, right beside us
guiding our stumbling feet

Hope for tomorrow
a future with him
true to his calling
disciples of our king.

Never Give Up

The race of life too important
all human flesh passes away
the goal of paradise
ours if we never give up
focused on the Christ

Stripped to the bare essentials
running with Christ
his Spirit within us
let him set the pace

God knows the path
let us be his feet
the race of life too important
in him our victory.

Whose We Are

Listen to the voice within
to the growing faith inside you
cleave not to man
but to our master, the Christ

Remember whose we are
the people of his sacrifice
redeemed by the blood of the lamb
we rise alone with him

Ignore the other calls
false claims on our lives
share his message of hope
all need to hear his voice.

The Vigil of His Faithfulness

Our weak piety
unable to be faithful
to abide by the law
to live righteously

God waits patiently
the vigil of his faithfulness
present in our day to day
hope we will turn to him
to change our sinful ways

A seed alone planted
when we come to believe
needing care and nurture
if we are to succeed

Guided by the Spirit
the example of Christ’s life
sent into the wilderness
to share his message of love

Waiting for Us to Change

God, in his mercy,
his faithfulness to his promise
waiting for us to change
to return from our rebellion

Faithful to his people
even when we deny him
claim our independence
as if we do not need him for life

Our happiness, fulfillment,
our hope in him alone
he is our faithful father
ever calling us to come home.

Jezreel

God planting a seed
a hope for reconciliation
one people, one hope in him
after major pruning

Turning his back on us
because we refuse to be faithful
a nascent hope only
to be buried in the ground
for another season

Dormant in the days of Lo-Ammi
not his holy people
praying we may claim that future
walking as children of God

He remains faithful
hope even in judgment
that we would return to him
and cleave once more
to our father, our king

Lo-Ammi

The indictment of God
the child of a faithful man
Lo-Ammi (not my people)
turning his face from them

Are we really so different
claiming a Christian nation
yet refusing to be faithful
to walk as our savior lived

The thread too weak
feeble steps only
claiming a belief
but walking in selfishness

Lost and wandering
a faith as thin as rice paper
failing to proclaim
the love of the risen God

Hope in God Alone

Not in the princes of the earth
whose plans die with them
hope in God alone
trust in his unfailing love

His love unending
for all that he has made
I fear his mighty power
I am in awe of his grace

Help me Lord

Comfort in His Guiding

How to pray
to the creator
something we need to learn
to reach the heart of God

In asking Christ
how to pray
a gift for the ages
down to you and me

Comfort in His guiding
petitions to the creator
how to pray
taught by the son

I can almost hear the disciples
unsure of what to do
humbly asking their master
how to pray to our king

Cleave to Christ

Live Christ,
hold onto him
like reaching into good soil
with our hands instead of a trowel
holding on tightly
feeling the goodness
the richness
living within our hands
a rock to hold onto
life giving nourishment
the word, his life
all that we need

Wanting More Coins

Somehow jealous
forgetting the mercy
wanting more coins
when our wages should be for our sin

The coin we are given
paid by our savior
forgiving us forever
if we but believe

Called by our savior
to be servants in the field
spreading his message
that all would believe

Going out, as the savior sent us
to the ends of the earth
making disciples, not members
that all may be paid

The same precious coin we receive

Unearned Wages

The equal pay we receive
whether new or old
working for years in the fields, the vineyard
to the ends of the earth
or new on the scene
just stepping foot in the fields
beginning our service
all the same
each of us with unearned wages
paid by Christ alone
forgiving us of our sins
paying our way
our sins washed away
giving addition
the wages of grace
that we may enter in

In some ways the wages
equal pay for equal work
none of us earning
the wages that he paid
the salvation that we enjoy
a reward unearned
by grace alone saved

For Such Little Things

The concern of God
for such little things
the lives of mortal man
when compared to all of creation
amazing that he cares

We are but a breath, a whisper
our lives a fleeting shadow
our understanding so weak
when compared with
the infinite wisdom of God

Yet God is our rock
and our refuge
our savior from all enemies
faithful when we to cry out
even redeeming us from ourselves

My Plea, with David

How I thirst for you oh Lord
in the quiet of the night
through the din of the day
in the chambers of my heart

I call to you in whispers
in shouts, in desperate cries
come near to me oh Lord
and answer my plea

Show me what I must do
how my family will be sustained
teach me your will today
for my path in this life

Save me Lord, I pray

I need you by my side

Love, like we were Jesus

The now common expression,
“What would Jesus do?”
abbreviated further
to merely WWJD?

Not in his actions
though that was enough
thinking deeper still
to why he did what he did

We are called
as his servants
to love like we were Jesus
to walk in our savior’s feet

Only then, putting on Christ,
would we know how to act
faithful to our calling
walking the way of the cross.

More Than We Could Earn

The coin we are given
our time in the fields
more than we could earn
paid by his sacrifice
already assured
when we accept the owner’s offer
work until our time is done
a coin to enter heaven.

Too often I hear the echo

We should love
have a balm in our walk

loving our neighbor

part of the flock

going where he sent them
emboldened by their faith
doing our master’s work

email of 7/23/2010 from General Board of Church and Society, The United Methodist Church

Open Your Doors, Lift up Your Hearts for Immigrants and their Families

This Thursday, July 29, Arizona's law, SB 1070, will begin to be enforced. I will be there to stand with the immigrants in Arizona who are being driven out or driven under because of this repressive law.

I am joining other people of faith who are going to Arizona to specifically spend time at the border to hear the voices of all affected by the broken immigration system in the United States.

I know many of you want to be there as well, but are unable to go. You can still be involved, however, and here is how:

Join us in prayer:

Following a 4:30 a.m. PST march to the capitol in Phoenix, a statewide prayer vigil will begin at 6 a.m. PST and every two hours through the rest of the day in different cities in Arizona. Many United Methodist churches will open their doors that day for people to come and pray. Please open your church for prayer on July 29, too.

Take action against copycat legislation in your state:

Throughout the summer, states have stood with Arizonans in prayer and action through the Isaiah 58 project. As folks have signed up to pray, they have also signed a petition urging elected leaders to reject Arizona-like legislation.

I strongly encourage you to sign the petition today, and bring a copy of it to your church for others to sign on July 29 as they come to pray. If you are unable to download it, please send me an e-mail and I will send it to you.

What to pray for on July 29:

You can pray for the safety of immigrants and their families, and for moral courage for our elected leaders to finally bring about just, humane immigration reform. Humane reform entails a pathway with minimal obstacles for undocumented immigrants, the reunification of families separated by long waits and indefinite detention, and the protection of the rights of all workers.

SB 1070 goes beyond what is in federal legislation and will give a high likelihood to racial profiling, which has already started in some instances.

The law criminalizes people of faith who provide transportation or who "shield" in a building any undocumented person. This legislation, for example, will make it illegal for United Methodists in Arizona to give undocumented immigrants a ride to church or to care for them within their church buildings.

Therefore, it is incumbent on all of us to kneel in prayer and stand in unison against these kinds of laws and demand that President Obama and Congress enact just, humane reform.

Again, I hope you will sign the petition and share it with others. It reads:
We, as people of faith recognize and affirm the presence and contributions of immigrants to our state. We strongly urge you to reject any legislation resembling Arizona's SB 1070, a law that denies due process for immigrants, increases the likelihood of racial profiling, and criminalizes those who offer direct aid for immigrants. What is needed to fix our broken immigration system is leadership by the federal government — that is, the president and members of Congress from both parties — to enact humane, comprehensive immigration reform that reunites families and provides a pathway to legal status for those who are undocumented.
Thank you for all you do!

In Christ,

Bill Mefford

Live Christ

Our path not as vague as we protest
our calling straight-forward
to live Christ all our days
to follow the way of the cross

To love our God wholly
submitting our lives to him
to love our neighbors sacrificially
to be willing to die for them

We are the sheep of the shepherd
where he leads we must go
ignoring the other voices calling
trying to cause us to stray
to lead us from our path

Ignore the Other Voices

If we are to be servants
if we are to be sheep of his flock
only if we ignore the other voices
focus only on the Christ

His life saved us
in the way he lives life
join him in his dying
in him we rise to life

Serve as he calls us
not distracted from our work
go forth as his disciples
doing our master’s work

Resurrected from the Waters

Alive in Christ
rising with him from our baptism
resurrected from the waters and
commissioned with the Spirit
to continue his holy work

Each of us believers
called to do our part
to use our gifts for God’s glory
not to hide our light;
to dance, and sing, and shout

Masks of Clay Only

Like masks of clay only
the differences between us
false grounds to claim another unworthy
when we all carry our sin

Only when we come to Jesus
accept his saving grace
only then are we worthy
to come before our God

Working in the vineyards
in the fields of the Lord
our humbly response only
to the grace given by God

Nothing we can do to earn heaven
to life in eternity
all of us like our neighbor
needing Christ to be restored

Masks of Difference Only

The illusion of something unique
that we somehow are worthy
that more than grace is at play
in bringing us to glory

We craft for ourselves
stumbling blocks for our neighbors
as if they are unworthy of grace
when we deserve God’s favor

Nothing farther from the truth
no matter when we come to believe
our lives the save as them
all of us needing the saving of Christ

Masks of difference only
at our base we are all made of clay
all of us sinners, unworthy
by God alone are we saved

Seeing Ourselves

Part of the problem
the blinders
the cataracts
the things getting in the way
keeping us from seeing clearly

All of us sinners
yes, we know that,
but we still sit in judgment
on the merits of our neighbors
their worthiness for redemption
we get in the way of saving grace

Needing new eyes
seeing ourselves in our neighbors
all of us sisters and brothers
all made worthy by Christ
the same coin in our hands
the same saving grace
only through this
may we approach the throne of grace

Are We His Followers

When we make judgments
when we grumble about his grace
when we do not offer love
when we cast the others out

Are we his followers
the sheep of his flock
if we are to be disciples
we must act as the savior said

Loving our neighbors
being happy when they are saved
all of us unworthy
yet all claimed as children of God

God’s love amazing
his grace poured out on all
each of us saved by the blood
washed clean by the blood of the lamb

Happy for My Neighbor

If I were one of the workers
those toiling in the field
how would I feel about my neighbor
who was paid as much as me

Would I be upset, ungrateful
for the precious coin in my hand
would I forget the others
who were in the vineyards
while I strayed in far off lands

I should be happy for my neighbors
whenever they come to believe
more fruit for the harvest
more sinners that are redeemed

That I would see more clearly

A prayer in the office
in praise and thanksgiving
the success of the operation
giving me new eyes for him

That I would see more clearly
the wonders of his grace
his love and creation
my place in paradise

That I would be more mindful
of the gifts he pours out on me
to be more conscious
of his calling to me

My focus on my savior
my new eyes on him
walking in faithful more surely
following where he will lead

no divisions, all made worthy

Pouring out Him Love

In what we say and do
living out his commands
to love one another
as he loved all of us

Nothing did he hold back
all did he give
calling us friends not servants
going to the grave

Love boundless
nothing we can repay
offering the same to our neighbor
each and every day

Such a tall order
the command of our risen Lord
needing the Spirit’s power
to even come close to this call

All of us unworthy
yet all us are to be redeemed
believing in our savior
and acting on his word

Grace in Equal Measure

None of us worthy
all of us have sinned
all of us estranged from God
our creator and king

Only by Christ
may we enter in
coming before God in his courts
dare to walk before him

Our toil in the fields of the Lord
not the basis of our reward
Grace in equal measure
whenever we come to believe

God’s Extravagant Love

Nothing like the world’s judgment
giving only when given
offering only to those who would repay
holding back forgiveness, compassion
only giving in kind

God’s extravagant love unending
his grace beyond our imagination
in Christ we are all forgiven
all of us offered his love
his offering of paradise
