Can you hear Jesus

in words separating,

segregating people;

those He loves and

those He cast out.

Do you hear our Savior

when you hear judgment;

do you hear grace,

when our neighbors

are called unworthy.

Can you hear Jesus

in words of limitation,

finding some to be left out;

left out for who they are

to be sent away from God.

Hey, get down, you there

what are you doing in the pulpit

you have not been trained, schooled,

How dare you desecrate the temple;

who let you in, where did you get that collar

who do you think you are

why are you crying out for justice

Don’t you know, haven’t you heard

your kind doesn’t belong there

you have not been ordained

we had a committee, we voted

we’re the ones to interpret scripture

you’re on the outside

Heresy, blasphemy

Jesus, son of Mary, of Joseph,

you can’t be the Messiah

who said to heal on Sunday

who called you to preach

to claim the mantle

Not for us to judge
to set apart
to segregate
to make boundaries
walls
between God’s love
and man
We are to listen to Christ
to the way of the cross
God’s love endless

Can you hear Jesus
in words separating
segregating people
those he loves
those he cast out

Do you hear our Savior
when you hear judgment
do you hear grace
when our neighbors
are called unworthy

Can you hear Jesus
in words of limitation
finding some to be left out
left out for who they are
