Discussing the local business

Barking out the news
sharing with the neighbors
arguing, debating
gossip over the fence
discussing the local business
in words we don’t know
the dogs in the yards
our laundry in the street.

Around the puddle

The drying puddle of soda
almost invisible to the eye
like the oasis in the desert
the ancient watering hole

Like elephants remembering
coming together in one place
the seven carpenter ants
all finding this space

The sugar on the counter
drawing them from the dark
out into the light where we live
causing us to shout

The ants in our kitchen
walking round and round
wondering what to do,
what would E.O. Wilson think?

Sugar ants and carpenters
all finding treats
across the counter
heading for the sink

Little crumbs, drops of Kool-aid
or maybe Hi-C
a splash, a spill
of someone’s last drink

There long before us
the colonies must be quite large
not knowing how to act,
what would E.O. Wilson think?

scent messages

Smells, not words
chemical conversation
