By the Spirit’s Choosing – 2 – v3

A knowing of our lives
our talents and strengths
our histories and beliefs
the gifts God has given;
the Spirit speaking
guiding us from within

By the Spirit’s choosing
giving us each a purpose
gifts from God
talents to be used
given to each of us
welling up from within

Our hands, our feet
our voices to God’s cause
becoming workers in the field
sheep and shepherds as well
doing our Master’s work
out in the world

Tongues

The ability to speak
to interpret tongues
nothing to focus on
in the gathered crowd
the confusions causing
not lifting up
be mindful of the people
that they may be led
brought closer to him
our Creator, our God
that the words in languages
musings of the Spirit
that they would lift up
all of God’s children

From within our hearts

The spirit working
manifesting gifts within us
sharing in the work
Christ’s message of love
from deep within our hearts

Each given different gifts
as we are chosen
empowered by the spirit
working from within us
fulfilling our calling from God

Many Gifts

Many gifts needed
each given for the whole
all for the community
the family of God

To speak the truth
the non-believers entering in
the faithful led by God
the glory to share

Lifting each one up
gathered in their hands
the love of God
the fellowship of man

Each to share their gifts
within the community
offered to bring God near
his truth for all to hear

Parables to Us

Speaking as he did, Christ spoke in the language
in words that the poor, the simple, everyday people
in words they could understand, reaching those open
ready to hear his message, a world changed right side up

Lessons of bread, of water, of fig trees bearing fruit,
stories of lost sheep, of prodigal sons, of the land,
of seeds in different soils.
Lessons in words they live.

Like the rich, the powerful, the elites,
we may hear them as parables,
lessons wrapped in a language we no longer know,
within them, if we become humble,
truths, a way to live out our lives
as God would intend

1 Corinthians 14:13-19 and sermon,

Suncook United Methodist Church,

At His Table

We come together, kneeling
at His table, set for us
the table of the one
who was visited by the shepherds
who received gifts from the wise men
who ate with tax collectors, with sinners
who laid down his life
that we may live
This is His table, not our table,
open to all, to any who would come
who would accept God’s offer of love

His Father’s House

Christ, the man, the son of God
praying, His dream, his life,
a prayer of Isaiah, speaking clearly
making the world, His Father’s House,
a house of prayer, open to all,
the least, the last, the lost,
overturning the tables, the scales,
making the temple, the church
open, available, to all,
healing, in His father’s name
teaching, loving, sacrificing
to bring a message,
in a language they may understand
hope in a future with God

A House of Prayer

Would that we could be,
are sure that we are, that our place of worship
that our hearts are open, that are doors are free
that our church is a house of prayer
speaking in ways that the world will understand
a message clear and ready for all to hear
that our table, our hearts, our lives
do nothing, not anything
to stand in another’s way
that all feel welcome, valued
no matter their circumstances,
that we would welcome all,
just as Christ did

In their words

speaking to them in their words,
in stories, experiences they shared
lives close to the land, to family
to the crops and the animals,
speaking to them in a language they knew
so did our Lord preach, teach
share the story of God’s love
with those he met, walking this earth
He used, as we must, to share the message
in their words, to those willing, able
choosing to listen

Paul's Mistaken

Oooh, what was he thinkin?
Tellin the womenfolk to be quiet,
demur, deferring to their husbands...
Not on this watch, Apostle Paul
We're in the New World here
where they can speak, hold court,
and they do.

Keeping Rome in a comfortable place is all well and good;
but, was he on drugs?
Don't you remember Paul, you were living
working off the goodwill, the largess,
of many women?

1 Corinthians 14:33b-36; but See Romans 16:1-4 & Philippians 4:2-3
(of course, as my pastor reminded me, there is a good deal of scholarly debate as to whether or not Paul wrote the lines in 1 Corinthians, or whether they were added later by others...)
