#Anadama Dough – v2 #snow

Scraping new snow
crystals sparkling
after dropping off the girls
preparing for tomorrow;
Flakes like confectioner’s sugar
maybe sifted flour, powder,
breaking off the slush from the tires
pushing it to the shoulder, the edge.

Falling heavy, accumulating,
like too-wet anadama dough
dark and rich with molasses
rolling the snow, building,
The snow-flour sticking,
on the cutting board,
forming little balls, rolls,
ready for the oven,

Over the Orange Cone – v2

He didn’t know it when he placed it
the worker gathering them up
a challenge for the children
for each one in turn.

Walking to their school van
playing follow the leader
straddling the orange cone
barely clearing its top.

Good thing it was a short one
or they would have had to stop
following the leader
when the leader was too tall.

Poetry Where You Live is 15 years old today - 48,712 poems - 8.89 per day for 15 years

My blog, at www.raymondafoss.blogspot.com, Poetry Where You Live, was started February 4, 2004, while I was in my last semester of law school. Since then, I have posted 48,712 of my original poems (or 8.89 poems every day on average for 15 years).  I thank God for this gift, for the blessing of sowing seeds of the gospel to the ends of the earth. I pray they have found fertile soil to germinate and grow.

pink mittens clipped – v2

small pink mittens clipped
hanging from a pink sleeve
pink scarf hung loosely
hiding a stuffed old friend

her rabbit, fuzzy
its face peeking out
sitting in her mother’s lap
waiting for them to start

To Her Advantage – v2

Coming to tell me of her sister
stuck in the snow drift
the soft snow of this afternoon
perfect for the battle
forts and snowballs
to loose the dogs of war

Suddenly aware
of my statements
how she couldn’t move
taking the initiative
a barrage in sudden waves

Taking to her advantage
the immobility of her sister
a flurry of snowballs thrown
laughing at the carnage
until she herself was stuck

Sucked into the snow pile
well above their knees
vulnerable, in one place
extricated by their father
in peals of sudden glee

Bright after the snowfalls – v5

The world alive
brilliant in white
the azure sky
shining back in light
So beautiful the storm
after its passing
the world all sparkle
bright after the snowfalls
while the sun bathes us

Alive with shades
grades of color
the light reflecting
off the pure snow crystals
So beautiful in these moments
times to treasure
the stillness of winter
too soon melting, changing
after the storm’s passing

More Snow – v2

Another call in the night
an incredulous educator
another day of confusion
more snow falling now

Delaying their education
adding more white to our day
wondering what is in the offing
for the rest of this long winter

More snow to play in
more snow to shovel
tunnels to build
snowballs to make

More snow in the offing
the weather forecast
better get more sand
better get more shovels

Bright after the snowfalls – v3

A world alive
brilliant in white
the azure sky
shining back in light

So beautiful the storm
after its passing
bright after the snowfalls
while the sun is blazing

Teasing us to come
to spend time outside
to linger in the sunlight
to walk and look about

Warming sunshine
melting the snowdrifts
watching the glinting icicles
everywhere I go

Wiggly Teeth

as the chime was passed
purposely, around the circle
sharing our days
our important news

a recurring theme
breathed into the world
shared, excitedly,
a giggly word

Wiggly teeth
in glee, in wonder
so many teeth
so many treasures

the Tooth Fairy had better
stock up on quarters
because Pembroke children
will soon have teeth under pillows

My Baba Knitted

My Baba knitted
with wool of snow-white
she made me mittens
not some giant kite

They made my hands warm
they were as soft as new snow
but I played so hard
I accidently let one of them go

There in the cold snow
the animals found it one by one
and stretched it bigger;
my Baba called, “Come home son”.

I lost my mitten
I don’t know where
I looked and looked
then somehow it ended up in the air

It feel toward the ground
and landed in my hand
while the snow covered
the trees and the whole land

I found my mitten
it was stretched so big
I could almost wear it
as a new white wig

My Baba knitted
with wool, just so
but how it was stretched
she will never know.
