Ribbons of Children – v4

Amid the controlled chaos on the playground
gathering children before school
a living “Where’s Waldo” poster,
the schoolyard, the playground this morning
ribbons of children, running, skipping,
dancing over the blacktop, together, as one…
 
Being children, free, out in the open air
under a summer sky of blue, still summer,
at the very start of the school year,
snaking their way, through the hopscotch,
the jump rope, the tag and the banter,
coursing, like ants to the nest,
following a scent line in the dust…
 
No hands were held,
but they moved together,
as if connected, dancing, singing,
a ribbon of children, moving,
snaking a path through the others,
giggling, shouting, laughing all the way…

A ribbon of children – v2

Watching, silently,
on the edge of the playground,
a father dropping off children,
releasing them to the school…
 
Amid the controlled chaos
a living “Where’s Waldo” poster,
the schoolyard, playground this morning,
watching them forming, a living thread…
 
A ribbon of children,
running, skipping,
dancing across the blacktop,
as if stitched together, a line…
 
Being children, free,
out in the open air
snaking their way,
through the hopscotch court…
 
The jump rope,
the tag and the banter,
coursing, like ants to the nest,
following a scent line in the dust…
 
No hands were held,
but they moved together,
as if connected, giggling,
a ribbon of children, moving,
laughing as one…

Flowers Ablaze – v3

Walking down the sidewalk
on the way to pick up Shanequa
our littlest after elementary school
three in the afternoon, New Hampshire,
bathed in early October.
 
Low light breaks between
the tenements, pushing, striving,
through the late sunflowers
beams, shafts of brilliant yellow
this warm afternoon aglow.
 
Warm light floods my senses
overwhelms my ability to see it all;
but captured in the image
for us all to see once more,
a perfect moment frozen in time.

Nouns Verbs and Adjectives – v6

We added words, one by one, quickly,

onto the blackboard in the front of the classroom

their little arms raised, thrust, into the air,

sometimes too excited to wait.

Colorful language blurted out, passionate,

their urgent important words.

They were nouns, verbs, and adjectives

words of a walk in the forest, details,

pulled from their imagination, experience.

All are worthy, all are valid, at least for him, for her,

each one who named them, who spoke them out loud

all are written down, carefully, to be used.

Together we wrote a poem, stringing the words together,

communally knitting the lines, amid laughter, easy, fun,

before they wrote their own poem with their own words.

They used their own Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives

and Adverbs, so daringly!

There is Hope in the words

of my poems, Your words, Lord,

shared with me, my fingers on the keyboard

flowing from them onto the screen, the page

Faith in my walk in the world

in the knowledge of You,

the certainty of Your presence

Your abundant Grace

Love in my heart because of the ways

You touch my life, Your hold me,

giving me a family, a household of faith

to share my days, this journey

Together faith, hope and love

They are a force to mend the world

continue to give me words

filled with Your Love, our Hope.

“Love it!  You've captured the essence of writing not as a discipline but as joy.  And it is because it is pure joy (the agony comes later during revision) it is not a discipline in the sense of having rigid edges.  All doing from joy is a gift to the doer as well as the recipient whether cooking, writing, gardening or any other activity.  My joy activities are writing and carpentry.  All the rest require me to have discipline to get them done. –Roberta”

– About the process of writing as merely writing down the words, suggested by Roberta Woods earlier in the day. I see her point, based on the way my writing often comes quickly. Even when I edit it as I write, it is more to get it right/write. We had been talking about “one-book wonders” and had segwayed into a discussion of how she writes daily and how, when she starts writing a story, it often is prolific.
