The #Fatherhood of #God #poetry #God #Father #Creator #Fatherhood #child #children #son #brother #Christ

The posture of our hearts
Our internal picture
Images, words in scripture,
Our Abba Father, God...

The Fatherhood of God
Our grounding posture
Seeing God as Father
As Creator of all...

God’s love like a father,
We are his beloved children
God wants the best for us
Because He loves us that much...

The Fatherhood of God
Our belief in our being
Filling us with faith
Transforming our lives...

Lessons in Creation – v2

Grow straight like the tall mast pines
Use our bones, our brains, our wills
to walk confidently, boldly to do His will,
not follow the tide, the crowd
like a jellyfish, caught in Luna’s grasp,
flowing with the water, a feather in the wind.

Use our abilities, our gifts, our talents,
to do right, to be loving, caring,
watch our neighbors the plants,
the other creatures of our world.

See their lessons for us, the plant elders,
The rocks, the waters, the air,
how to live more simply,
in harmony, not in dominion,
following the commands
of the Potter, the Creator.

Exhortations from the Pulpit – v2

She raised words of power, of actions
a call to action, to not stand in the way;
but words to enable, to embolden, to do
our part too; to do the work of the kingdom
Christ’s work, to be the salt, the seasoning
the stirring of the waters
breaking the grip, the status quo
seeing work that needs to be done,
doing that work, whenever we can
being feet to the fire, the bellows
of the heat of change, stoking
the fires of revolution, of change, shifting
off the foundations of apathy,
of indifference, of complacency
in the lies of the greedy, the comfortable
thinking anew our place in the struggle
for justice, for equality, for the hungry,
the oppressed, the sick, the forgotten
the others, the stranger in our midst
heeding our roots, in Christ’s work, His mission
our calling today, now, following His example
caring for our neighbors, around the world
without borders, languages, or
blood-filled lines in the sand

God’s Unconditional Love – v2

God’s unconditional love
all of us part of the body
all gifted by God, blessed
rooted in God’s unmerited love
by this we may love.

The qualities of love
all of them grace, mercy
stretching that we may love
only by the indwelling
the Spirit of God guiding us.

Loved because God is love
forgiven though we sin
by this we are made able
to show love to our neighbors
unmerited, holy, grace.

A Lawyerly Question – v2

It always seems, wherever I turn
in holy scripture, in the bible,
we are the bad guys, the ones in the way
the ones asking Him questions, pressing for
the new law, testing the assertions,
learning the edges, the words -
“Who is our neighbor?”, a logical question,
Hardly worth casting aspersions over.

It was just the definition of the term of art,
a nuanced word thrown by Him into the mix
a new test of faith, of living the law of Moses,
of living the good life, the life well blessed
earning passage from Sheol, beyond the grave
the end of their days. It wasn’t a test so much
as a questioning for knowledge, learning,
asking, “Who is our neighbor?”

What Christ meant by the two commandments,
replacing the ten, Mosaic laws, regulations, rules
for life, layer on layer, parsed and teased,
as they are still. Rabbinical interpretation,
the lawyers, the scribes, just doing their best
to live the life of a religious man
asking to know, the bargain, the balance,
words to live by, these words of power.

Unexpected Conversation – v2

New Patrolman and
Law Student
Brothers sharing
Between classes
Debating, over lunch,
Gray edges of law -
Exigent circumstances.

Criminal procedure
Search and arrest
Seizure of property…
Inventory, by the book
Creating reasonable suspicion
To stop, search, discover -
A crime committed.

Learning together
From the other
Statute and precedent –
Practice Series
More coffee
(or Coke, your choice)
Awaits

A Hope A Promise – v4

A hope, a promise
on the page, these words
words of mettle, of metal,
a promise to fulfill
a hope to achieve
this nation, this dream
who we are as a people

We may not be there yet,
as a people, a nation,
our hope, our prayer
not fully achieved;
but an idea, a dream
a hope yet to be,
if we will believe

America, the beautiful,
at least in our minds
in our hearts, planted,
a nation, a republic,
governed by the people;
together sharing this dream
in your heart and mine

What we want to be
our aspirations, our creed
as in the name of Martin
one nation united;
spoken so long ago
that all would be equal
that all would be free

That we could all climb
that we ascend together
aspiring as a people
as our skills, our gifts
our God-given talents
where they would take us,
in a land that is free

We may not be there yet,
as a nation, a people
the dream of Martin,
not fully achieved;
but an idea, a dream
a hope yet to be
if we still believe.

feeling the sweat of Jesus – v2

walking with my Savior
my brother, my Master
no longer working alone,
carrying the load together
in the yoke of Christ

feeling the sweat of Jesus
beside me in the yoke,
walking on the way together,
sensing the Holy Spirit
guiding my uncertain steps
