Buzz

Buzz
In my ear
Behind my glasses
In my mouth.
Landing on my arm, neck, face, clothes
Oh, let me be.
Thwack, slap, sting

Welts rising
On uncovered pale arms
Wanting early summer sun.

Red spots from bites
Form patterns
On my skin

Ow, little black tormenters
Let me be!

Stick

Under the flat board
The second rail
Of the fence
By the walk,
Above the drop
To the brook -
One by six -
Weathered, peeling
and cracked

A tan
walking stick
(Diapheromera femorata)
Perched
Hanging on with
three legs
clutched the soft wood
from the summer rain

he swung as the cars blew by
forelegs and one more,
casting the spell

Me on my walk
Disconcerted
What was that?
Seemingly hovering
At first
Four inches or more
Motionless
By not

Sharing

Sharing memories
Pain of loss
Difficult tasks
Words and feelings
Poetry, not prose
Of the life we lost
When he met destiny

Unresolved emotions
Below the surface
But surfacing for me
In the words
You give me
Expressing thoughts
Analytically
Without tears

Mnemonic

Imagery to convey
Memory, feeling
Mood, moment
Smell, color, taste
Kinship
Wrapped in the words
I choose
To be evocative,
Emotive
To touch the reader
Making each poem
For everyman
Touching their place
In the world,
My turn of phrase
Theirs to use
For themselves.

Presentable

I saw you before
You were “presentable”
White chest hair, almost clear
Open mouth, broken tooth
Eyes at half-mast
Like Kennedy’s pictures

Called in the night
To identify your body
“Is this your father?”
Yes and no
Different, older,
Vessel only
Already two hours
Since your death
Livor mortis begun

Bright exam room
Chrome table
Body bag ready, red carpetbag
Ski duffel, one torn strap
One boot

Rush me out
Send me home
So they could take you away
And make you presentable
For viewing
Remembered now
Like yesterday
Years later
