In the Potter’s Hands – v2

Like malleable clay
warmed, cradled
lovingly held
in the potter’s hands
Our lives, our all
held, ever in his care
watched, guided
led through our days
if we will wear his yoke
submitting our way
to the potter’s hands

Jeremiah 18:1-11
----
In the Potter’s Hands

I am clay in the potter’s hands
Mold me, shape me, make me
What you will of me
Use me for your purposes
Imbue me with the skills, the spirit
To serve where you would have me serve
Performing the services you would intend
Wherever you would send me
However you would will me
To send me forth
From this space, this place
Into the world
As your servant, your son
Your child, in your image,
The image of your son,
Our brother, our example,
Our savior, like us clay
Held in the potter’s hands

Paths to God

In my faith, my tradition
one path, Christ
the way, the narrow gate
atoning for sin
an offering, the lamb
given on the cross
buried in the tomb
rising, giving us life

An older, deeper path
part of the same flock
all of them, the people
the children of Abraham,
of Isaac, Jacob, of Moses
of David, all the people
under the law, walking
in that light

What of others
where do these paths lead
fealty to the creator,
loving our neighbor
are these enough
without naming one way
how many
are the paths to God

January 1, 2010

the light of Christ

such hope, in the telling
the story of the visitors
the people from away
those from outside the ancient faith
Each of us, brought into the family
following the light of Christ
into the fold, the flock
members now
descendents of Abraham
stars in that heaven
grains of that same sand
following his star
the light of Christ
shining for you and me

Matthew 2:1-12

Visitors from the East

In some ways, this is our story
visitors from the east, the west
all points of the compass
coming to the Christ
following his natal star

His light shining
hope, love, God’s grace
piercing the darkness
revealed in the coming
of the babe in the manger
the man growing
choosing the cross
to set us free

Following his light
into relationship
leading us home
to our father, our master,
calling us to heaven above

January 1, 2010
Matthew 2:1-12

The Faithful Son

The Christ, coming to the earth
the faithful son,
following the master’s plan
submitting to the will of God
a servant, humble, even to death
the stain of our sin
the cup, poison
washing over his lips
Loving us, enough
God, Emmanuel
dying for me
faithful to the father
even unto death

Praying for the Garden

Reflecting, on our place in the garden
our role in its suffering, its need for rest
spending time with the creator
each of us praying for the garden
that it would be healed

So much of our world
yearning for peace
for rest from war, oppression, abuse
stewards, not consumers
of this good, good earth

On our knees, humbly before God
asking what we can do
to bring healing to the world
Sabbath from our labors, our excesses
peace to this wonderful earth

Suffering for Us

That he suffered as he did for us
more than we can fathom
God choosing to accept
the cloak, the weight,
our sins upon himself
drinking from the cup
the bitter judgment conferred
the lamb aware, yet taking on our sorrows
our sin, our punishment, our death
all of these his alone
that we may live

That He Died

So much of the Gospels, on his final week
the last days of Christ’s walk upon this earth
More important than anything before

That he died, taking on our sin
suffering the pain, the shame
setting us free, making us clean

His sorrows, the king brought low for us
love surpassing our understanding
such was the import of that week

Up into heaven, on the third day he rose
but the stain of our sin, our names engraved
remaining on the flesh of our savior
in this age and the next

His Final Days

The Passion of the Christ
his final days on this earth
from the adoration of the people
to sorrow, descending unto death
Beyond comprehension, our understanding
God, Emmanuel, taking on our sin
The babe, the prophet, the healer, the teacher
the king entering the city
hosannas in his wake
Foreboding clouds, a collision course
in the courts of power
evil on the march
Betrayed, accused, tried
judged for our sin
abandoned and alone
facing the scourge, the cross
Our lives, our names
engraved on the scars
the nails that pierced his hands

The Suffering of the Christ

God, Emmanuel
the king, a man of sorrows
betrayed, abandoned
beaten, hanging on the cross
all of humanity’s sins
on his shoulders he bore
the burden of our debt
the torture of the cross

God, Emmanuel
descending unto death
such love beyond measure
that we may live again

Thirsty Souls

Each of us seeking
assurances, comfort
in this life upon the earth
Thirsty souls, longing
living waters in the word of God
Relief in the scriptures
in the love, the promises
the gifts of the creator,
our savior, sustainer
love filling our cup, abundance
overflowing with joy

One Heart at a Time

Like individual starfish
gathered up, thrown back into the sea
our ministry, our service
in this troubled world
reaching out, reaching
planting seeds of love
in one heart at a time
Reach out, seek
ways to touch even one heart
spreading God’s love
like seeds, thirsty souls
ready for his living waters

One Heart at a Time
The title popped into my head
as I was posting this poem to
christianpoetry.org
----------------------
This One Will Live

The voices, the world,
not worth the effort
so many starfish, so many miles
unable to change the world.
Ignoring the doubts,
the judgment of the world;
this one will live,
one life at a time
thrown into the sea
toiling as he had been called
To the water’s edge
his purpose, his gift
casting the starfish
into the sea.
Making a difference
once action at a time.

Watching the Snow Falling

After getting home
driving in the gossamer snow
the dance of the crystals
falling in the air
accumulating on the roads

Sitting in my office
watching the snow falling
outside my window
trying to name the way
in which the flakes fell

Seeming to fall
like bits of potato flakes
sifted from about the curtain of the day
so light while in the air
but landing, sticky like cotton candy
that has warmed upon the ground

Beautiful, falling
constellations of flakes
like chemical chains,
all the elements in white

Light flakes but not alone
falling as individuals
dancing alone on the descent to earth
Connected, bits of cut taffeta
white fabric, frayed edges
spinning to the ground

To Remember Our Names

God, never to forget
like the rainbow after the flood
a reminder of his promise
the scars, the names of all humanity
engraved on the palms of his hands
Our savior, a living memory
the sacrifice he made for us
on the cross of Calvary

The nails, our names
the scars of his palms
our names, his sacrifice
engraved on the palms of his hands

Offering himself,

More than a tattoo artist
a name written on the skin

own names embedded within

In the Joy of Sharing His Story

Each year, Advent and Christmas
joy in the sharing of his story
God, the Christ-child, love
Emmanuel, come to earth
to set all of us, each one a prisoner,
to set we, the captives, free
Free from the world
from our sin
offering us peace
within his loving arms
spread wide for us
God, given for you, for me
that we may live again

Heralding a Savior

The choir of angels
singing with joy for all
heralding a savior
come to one and all

Across the night sky
their harmonies rang out
announcing the birth of Christ,
God, Emmanuel

Just as was foretold
every note, every jot
the fulfillment of all that was
the promise of God
come to earth, a son

With the angels, we now join
their heavenly song our own
the wondrous grace of God
in the coming of the son
just as was promised of old

1st Sunday after Christmas

To the Humble Shepherds

The angels proclaimed
Advent, the coming of the Christ-child
that Christmas night so long ago
singing in the heavens
to the humble shepherds alone
All of the heavenly host
singing hallelujahs into the night
to the workers in the field

Not to the royalty,
the wealthy or the priests
to the lowly shepherds,
with their animals out in the fields
They went, in joy
to the stable
to his humble manger bed
the fulfillment of prophecy
the child in our midst

As Micah Prophesied

In that night in Bethlehem
while the angels sang
the shepherds on the hillside
the babe, the son, born
as Micah had prophesied
The promise of God
fulfilling his birth foretold
the savior of the earth
not in a palace or to royalty revealed
born in the humble stable
laid in a manger bed

Angels Singing

On that cold night
while the shepherds watched their sheep
angels singing, across the sky
of God, of Love
come into the world

his humble, heavenly birth
Going to the stable,
rushing to his manger bed
all fulfilled, as the angels sang
peace has come to man

Emmanuel

In the awakening
the moving from Advent to Christmas
the fact of the fulfillment
Emmanuel born in Bethlehem
God, come down to earth,
laid in a manger
as a vulnerable baby

Walking this earth
a man, though divine
suffering as we do
the temptations of the world
Journeying as a servant
to God’s mighty plan
serving the poor, the sick
teaching of God’s wondrous love

Going the way of the servant
even unto death
Climbing the cross for our sin
the perfect sacrifice
Dying that we may live
clear of the stain of our sin
Rising that we may rise
to our eternal home once again

Out of Love Given

Out of the love given
Christ come into the world
God’s grace, his mercy
Our response, out of our gratitude
wearing virtues,
as the Christ before us
clothing ourselves
taking on the yoke, the mantle
the name of Christ
Offering ourselves
to our God and our neighbors
servants of the master
sheep of the shepherd’s flock

Putting on Christ

A garment of virtues
the grace of God given
putting on Christ
to guide our way

Mercy as he showed Mary
judged for her behavior
Kindness in his communion
his healing of the lepers
all who came to him

Humility in his servanthood
following the master’s call
Gentleness, when he said,
chiding the disciples,
“let the children come to me.”
Patience with their doubting
their failing to see.

Living in this world
but staying true to God
a model of righteous
what we aspire to be

A Suit of Virtues

Putting on Christ,
clothed in love
wearing, always
a suit of virtues
of mercy, kindness,
humility, gentleness, patience
all of these shown
by Christ, come into the world
His life a testimony,
an example, living out
the grace, the kindness
the love of God
modeled in the world
for us to follow

Repairing Our Brokenness

Christ, the babe, the man
up out of the waters
into his desert times
claiming Isaiah
the words of the prophet
fulfilled in his coming to earth

To set us free,
from whatever our chains
those of others or ourselves
leading us home
back to our Lord
through the blood
his life, we are redeemed

Repairing our brokenness
lifting our sin
the stain, the struggles, our cares
offering us hope
joy in this life
and treasures
in the life to come

Out of Our Brokenness

In his reading of the scroll
the words of Isaiah fulfilled
claimed by the Christ
out of his tempting
His ministry about to begin

Hope for the captives,
relief for the oppressed
setting the prisoners free
all of humanity
saved through his life
his offering of himself for us

Lifting us up
out of our brokenness
giving us through his gift
his sacrifice on the cross
no longer death at the end
a way back to the father instead

Repairing the Breach

Christ, coming into the world
through his choice
his going to the cross
in his humility, his humbleness
a gift beyond comprehension

Repairing the breach
setting our lives free
no longer weighed down by sin
death has lost its sting

Bringing us back to God
providing us a way
back to the loving arms of God
out of our sinful ways

As we are
in our fragile humanity
our stubbornness, our free will
God’s plan worked out through the son
leading us home again

Repairing Our Lives

The carpenter, the potter
the son, the Christ
come into the world
called by our brokenness
our humanity, like Adam
a curse, keeping us from God
The son, the one foretold
come into the world
repairing our lives
our sin washed away
in our repentance
our humbly accepting
the gift of salvation
offered to the whole world

Why He Came

At the beginning
out of the waters
into the desert
tempted by the devil
returning to Nazareth
claiming Isaiah
the mission of his life
why he came into the world
God, Emmanuel
setting us free
out of the world
merely in the world
walking with our brother
through his sacrifice
a way home
for each of us
to our loving God

As We Are

God loves us
as we are, grace
Christ came, into the world
to repair our brokenness
our torn lives, splintered families,
our shattered hopes, and deferred dreams
Christ enters in, taking away our sin
giving us freedom, joy
real hope for our lives
setting us on a path
leading for home

A Cascade of Gifts

A waterfall, a stream
a cascade of gifts
for all our senses
all of our needs
endless, one after another
in his grace, his teaching
in the story of the Christ
at creation, sharing with God
the word, in the making
in his life, in those who claim his name
sent forth, to the ends of the earth
all of creation singing
praises to the king
a cascade of gifts
poured down, endlessly,
from the heart of God

“I Am the Truth”
by Robert J. Phillips (Illinois, USA)

Being Led by the Spirit

Feeling the Spirit within us
being ruled, led by the Spirit of God
choosing the way of God
the example of Christ
living within our hearts
Drawing the living waters
the wellspring guiding our steps
walking each day
as the children of God

Romans 8:9-16

Poor Shepherds

Like the poor fisherman
eking out a living by the sea
the ones who would follow the Christ
Angels announcing the savior’s birth
to poor shepherds, alone in the night
tending sheep upon the hillside
going to Bethlehem
Witnesses to the angels’ joy

Like the shepherds,
but knowing more of his story,
we must leave the manger
the stable bathed in light

Going from Bethlehem
out into the dark world
proclaiming our joy
the Good News
Christ has come
to set us free
Sharing the news
to the ends of the world

Singing with Creation

Each of us in our turn
joining our voices, our hearts
singing with creation
a song of praise to God
All of the heavens
every corner of the earth
harmonies unending
a symphony in joyful worship
all of creation
singing our praises to God
