Was the Dream a Lie – v2

Did we come undone
as a nation, as a people
believe in ourselves alone
believing the myth of freedom
making it on our own

Did we believe we could succeed
pulled up by our bootstraps
without the hand of God
did we settle for the brass ring
not for treasure unknown

Was the dream a lie
the myth of self-made men
believing greed was good
that we had no responsibilities
standing on our neighbors

All of this a lie,
a con to keep on striving
feeding the gluttony of power
believing we too could become like them
the barons on the mountain

Our Faith Call Us

Words of her poem
our prayer as a nation
a promise to the troubled
the oppressed yearning to breathe free
Our faith calls us
to an even deeper promise
to seek union, communion
with all who seek you
all who long to walk
with our Risen Lord
to lift up our neighbors
balm for their wounds
to walk with our Savior
where he will lead
Our faith calls us
to be hope for the hopeless
to assuage their fears
and give the prisoners comfort

To welcome the stranger

Opening our hearts
our nation, our churches
the source of our strength
in Christ’s example
To welcome the stranger
the Others, those different
to give them hope for connection
a place of deep healing
Together sharing, joining
into God’s kingdom
a hope universal
in stormy seas
Life in the union
welcoming the stranger
stronger for the bond
the joining of more threads

To care for the homeless

Deep in our beliefs
the roots of God’s teachings
the prophets still speaking
across the ages, the waters
Deep words of calling
the Savior, his children
to care for the homeless
all those in need

To give hope to the dreamer

within our hearts,
the calling of God
to give hope to the dreamer
the seeker in all
within us a prayer
to be useful, worthy
to live out our faith
humble in our service
to give hope to the dreamer
the seeker in all
giving our witness
our response to your call
