our dinner was delayed

 Our dinner was delayed

She was nonplussed

I was enraged

we were being ignored

our dinner was delayed

our ticket on the carousel

our order untouched

as others were being served

sitting in the restaurant

She was black, I was white,

grabbing a bite to eat

waiting to see our pastor

going through couple’s counseling

before we could marry

She was nonplussed

I was incensed,

wanting to rail at the injustice

that we were ignored

our dinner delayed

when this was nothing,

common place, normal,

nothing she hadn’t seen
