An Amazon rainforest denuded,
the verdant woods down the road,
An empty lot now clear cut
a landscape convulsed in pain.
 
The sorrow of the ferns
belying the natural state,
The character of this place
before the hand of man.

There are secrets in those dark waters - v3

Behind the trees, the brush, the hills,
outside the paths, the ways -
the roadways, the highways,
off into the woods, the swamps,
the brushlands behind them
Where mystery holds sway...
 
There are secrets in those dark waters,
buried in the deep, the depths,
ripe with decay, with vegetation,
shrouded in mystery,
hidden in plain sight,
Just beyond our reach…

they are no longer there

We have driven away the egrets, the ibis,
the storks, the great blue herons,
humans have destroyed the water, the wild place,
the space beside the road.
 
For many months I have seen them
by the water, by the road,
on the way to work and home again
but they are no longer there.

By the side of the road I travel

By the side of the road I travel
a bit of wilderness, wildness,
a swamp contained but present
by the city, the urban sprawl.
 
A man-made pond behind them,
encroached on the right and left,
a ribbon of sidewalk before these wetlands
a road that I travel to work and back home again
connecting to the main road.
 
Water birds are so often present, fishing these waters,
sometimes watching the contractors near them
bringing people, housing, ever closer,
but the deer still walk this road each night.
