Perfume of Autumn

The fields, the cornstalks
turning like rice paper
erect for this moment
soon to fall
to meet the earth
like maples, the oaks
the chill in the air
harkening to winter
the squawk of the geese
bleating in the skies
the perfume of autumn
as the world dies
