Different textures of winter

Different textures of winter

watching the ditches

the fields, the forests,

different textures of winter

come into view

the mounds, the piles,

human intervention

evidence at the margin

the great black ribbon of road

then come the fields,

the pasture lands, the hillsides,

smooth clean snow

covering fall’s harvest below

finally the forests, the woodlands,

the trees still snow-covered

pillows of white remaining

on the branches, the forest floor

different textures of winter

some smooth, some jagged,

the world in this season

covered in shades of white
