the choice to
attack
if it is made by
us
what comes next
after the first
launch
the pregnant
question
but not within
our power
only to react
what comes next
if we bomb
Damascus
the airfields,
the seats of power
but not the
stockpiles
if we give Assad
time
to run, to move
the planes, the
munitions
time to harden
the stockpiles
what comes next
and the step
after that
and further on
if he does it
again;
what comes next
if he bombs
Israel
if Iran has a
nuke
what happens
then;
what will we do
if Jerusalem is
burning,
if an embassy is
attacked;
what is the end
game,
the end of the world?

There
should be a consequence to Syria, if it did use chemical weapons against its
own people. The legal way to do that is through the UN and the Security
Council. And that approach should have been used each time they have done so.
As morally reprehensible it may be, it is not for a single nation state to
right all the wrongs in the world. And, more to the point, how will a
unilateral strike achieve any of the goals or purposes articulated; AND, how
will the world or America be safer now and in the coming months and years if we
were to bomb Syria? There will be a military response from Syria (at least)
that will undoubtedly widen the scope of the law. I am left thinking of the
speech in the move, A Man for All Seasons when Thomas More is defending the
requirement to work within law.
William
Roper: So, now you give the Devil the benefit of law!
Sir Thomas More: Yes! What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil?
William Roper: Yes, I'd cut down every law in England to do that!
Sir Thomas More: Oh? And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned 'round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country is planted thick with laws, from coast to coast, Man's laws, not God's! And if you cut them down, and you're just the man to do it, do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I'd give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake!
