Amygdala hijack – v4

His words incoherent, gibberish,
her face beet red, sweating,
decibels rising, quickly,
shouting, unrelenting panic,
a baby’s tiny, clenched fists…

Amygdala hijack, chaos,
in full flower, erupting,
no chance at compromise,
no possibility for agreement,
for another two hours, at least…

Snake Brains on the Courthouse Steps – v3

Ancient response, predictive,
learned behavior, automatic,
more instinctive, without thinking…

Fear, panic, amygdala hijack,
reason dissolving, anxious, impatient,
wanting to run, to flee in terror…

Seeking compromise, a solution,
reason, decision, impossible, devolving,
to the primitive, in the grip of the snake…

When a big dog attacks

Their response engrained
the stimuli perhaps hidden
as when a big dog attacks
seeing the manifestation
body language, reason
changed in an instant
the programmed reactions
deep within their brains
something instinctive
primal, primitive
learned long before
when the big dog attacks
the same in the court
in settlement, resolution
on cue devolving
losing perspective, the case

Exposed Nerves

The masks, the layers
reverting to an earlier state
their comfort, their reason,
all of these peeled away

His face red, swearing
her words incoherent
with decibels rising
their baby’s clenched fists

Amygdala hijack
rising, in full flower;
no chance at compromise
for another two hours

As if on the savannah
hunted, as prey,
running from the lions
heart racing all day

Compromised Parties

Maybe with advanced degrees
with high IQ’s together
yet primitive brains
compromised parties
on the courthouse steps
Entering into negotiation
with their snake brains
Amygdala hijack well underway

Emotional Overload

Reason overwhelmed
panic, fear, overload
bringing us down,
into the stem
our primitive brain

Thinking impossible
wanting to run
synapses shut down
needing to step back
to reason, to think

preserved in amber
the court orders, the decrees

the children on their knees

The rational voice

We think we are superior
evolved, reasoned
far above the snake,
the animals of the field
yet the rational voice
within our brains
the softest voice in the chorus
of the other voices there
ready in an instant
when we are gripped by fear

Our emotions manifest

Subtle movement, twitches
unconscious, uncontrollable
we are human primates,
not so far from the savannah,
able to reason, to think, to ponder
considering our options
self-aware of our situation
yet deeper yet, primitive
our brains, our emotions
manifest in our bodies
outside of our control
exposed prey or predators
rational man forgotten
deep within us animals
seeking to survive
