Far too often, so easy,
we believe the lie of the
sing song
that sticks and stones will
break our bones
but words will never hurt us
Far too often, so easy,
whether on the playground
in the halls of power
even in church
Words can destroy, cut,
tear down our neighbors
sowing division
starting a schism
All of us called, each one
of us,
to be lights to the nations
shining light in the
darkness
to the ends of the earth
That light is Love, Christ,
the fact of Jesus
God come down to save us
walking the earth
Christ modeled love, mercy,
servanthood, compassion
Jesus chose the cross
to see us free from sin
He did not destroy, judge,
Christ offered forgiveness
even on the cross
a prayer to Almighty God
We should lift up, shine,
carrying His message
then we would truly be light
to pierce the darkness of
this world

Based on the comments of Jim Wallis on
Speaking of Faith, November 29, 2007
He was talking about whether to change politicians
or change the wind, to change the public opinion
which guides politics. He used the example
of President Johnson’s statement to the
Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. that it would
take 5 years for a voting rights bill but
it actually took 5 months to pass the Voting Rights Act,
after the March in Selma.
