Conditioning our heart
preparing our lives
ready when God calls us
to change our path

Prepared to go further
open to God’s purpose
His call on our lives
alive for the journey

Opening scripture
spending time with You;
Carving out a space
to be intentional in our faith

To set aside moments
to commune with our God;
Opening scripture
spending time with You

Making God a priority
of our life, day to day;
Serving God only
living our faith

the goodness and mercy of God – v2

What should we tell them
in truth there is only one hope,
the goodness and mercy
the grace of Almighty God

All else a fiction
a grave, an earthen idol,
no nation, no people
is better than the rest

All of us are fallen, mortal
conquered by our sin;
only the sacrifice of Christ
can give us life again

Only the goodness
the mercy of God,
His grace poured upon us
forever, for all time

children's sermon, "wear your mouth guard", by Pastor Ruth Foss, Stetson Memorial United Methodist Church, January 11, 2015

Children’s message 01/11/2015
contemporaneous notes

-         Mystery Box –
o   mouth guard and pair of pliers

-         A mouth guard is to protect our teeth, to keep them safe.

-         What happens if you don’t use the mouth guard?
-         … a dentist has to use pliers to take out your teeth

-         And the coach won’t let you into the game without the mouth guard

-         Faith is much like the mouth guard
-         We put on Christ to be safe and protected

-         Without the protection, Satan can attack us
-         Satan tries to pluck us out of God’s hands.

-         And you don’t want to go out into the game of life without your mouth guard either.
-         God goes with us, Jesus is with us through the tough times.
-         Jesus gives us peace beyond all understanding in our struggles.

-         We put on Jesus, our faith, our salvation, so we can share the security, that peace with others so they too can be protected in the game of life.

Boston Sports – v2

I raced to the Garden,
my old stomping grounds
for a basketball game,
cheering for the Celts
swarming on the court,
shooting for three so many times
I thought I would lose my mind

Quickly, running to Fenway
I watched the Red Sox score another run
the crowd went crazy,
under the cloudy sky
but the athletic catch by Jeter,
brought us to our knees

A soccer ball of black and white
fell on the stadium field
The Revolution were fast, righteous,
The midfielder made a dangerous slide,
onto the muddy field
daringly taking the ball for a goal

His kicking of the ball
like an end zone celebration
no words of the Bruins or Patriots yet;
That is for another season
another celebration, Boston sports,
a major league obsession

I love her but she is broken – v3

the words of fiction jarring
his words were laced with expletives
but the invective spot on
the state of our nation as it is

the dream remaining
but America is broken
lost, wallowing, misguided,
in greed and self-loathing

lost in the muck
the mire of our fiction
that we are the greatest,
truly exceptional as a nation

we have fallen prey
to our own good fortune
believing the lies, the fiction,
of our own creation

I love her but she is broken
I cry for my children, the others,
living in a world where we are
lagging behind the nations

not caring for each other
dividing our neighbors
haves and have-nots
sharing nothing in common

We may once have been
the light upon the hill;
but we are living in the shadow
of what might have been
