I love her but she is broken – v4

a clip from a television channel
the words of fiction jarring
his words were laced with expletives
but the invective spot on
the state of our nation as it is
so many hurting under our delusion

the dream remaining
but America is broken
lost, wallowing,
in greed and self-loathing
not following our own truth
there is not freedom for all

lost in the muck
the mire of our fiction
that we are the greatest,
exceptional as a nation
that we alone are the
shining city on the hill

we have fallen prey
to our own good fortune
believing the lies
of our own creation
that we alone are the hope
for now, for all mankind

I love her but she is broken
I cry for my children
living in a world where we are
lagging behind other nations
in measures that mean more
than the number of firearms on hand

not caring for each other
dividing our neighbors
haves and have nots
sharing nothing in common
believing the allure of the brass ring
the lie of the American Dream

We may once have been
the light shining upon the hill
but we are living in the shadow
of what might have been
needing a rebirth, a reawakening
to what we might yet be
