In thinking about their
future
the present times of
struggle
I cry for the children
wanting a better world
standing in the classroom
standing by their beds
before the children, our
children
trying to find words sufficient
to change the path, the
trajectory,
the hope of our nation
the dream of America
in decline, in our striving
the coarseness of our
dialogue
our climbing, our
willingness
to step on our fellow man
I cry, I lament, for our
nation,
for all of our children
like the ancient psalmist,
for our nation in decline
no longer the best, the
greatest,
though we are the only
superpower
more powerful than the rest
but we are lagging behind others
in so many measures, the
reality,
striving after greed instead
not sharing a common burden
nothing to unite us,
joining,
striving for our own
pleasure
ignoring our neighbors
others who are in need
I cry for the children, our
children
for our nation, our people
for what might have been
and what may someday be yet
a nation truly free, open
lifting our neighbor up
but we are telling others
how to live
yet not following our own
advice
like parents who say,
“do as I say not as I do”,
than the reality we deny
so much a lie, exceptional,
when we are in the pack
not leading from the front
but exhorting from the back
