from the well of our sadness
the song of that story,
the fight of their people
long before the sorrow
that we cry for Ukraina,
at the story of her misfortune,
our hearts begin to weep…
formerly Kozaks cherished,
the mighty fight before them,
overcoming the serpents,
the ravens at the ready, waiting,
in that battle where they vanquished,
cast off their chains for freedom,
oh, many that day come again, real soon…
may the ancient Kozaks rise up,
from their lofty tombs remember,
all your noble high mountains,
descend to meet the challenge,
the fight of your people, raging
to reclaim the memory, glory,
of your freedom that was devoured,
“My dear heart! My darling!”
