donning the mask of bravado – v4
Quietly sitting in the waiting room
long minutes clicking on
the door swinging open
as if the curtain were pulled from the stage
I can picture him before he entered in
anxious, outside, by the door
as an actor in the wings
puffing himself up, putting on his mask
still in the waiting room, quiet,
shatter by his bluster, bravado
a mask hiding his pain
his fear of tomorrow
“Where’s the coffee and donuts?”,
he shouted aloud to the audience
hiding his trembling spirit
the surgery to come
donning the mask of bravado
projecting a sense of confidence
but his body betraying him physically
that the whole act was a lie
